What electrical components can I damage by incorrectly jump starting or replacing my battery?

Asked by bill7778 Nov 18, 2011 at 09:33 AM about the 2004 Ford Escape

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I jump started a dead battery in my 2004 Ford Escape.  The car ran OK for a while although a little rough but later the battery was dead again.  This time I replaced the battery with a new one.  Even with the new battery my engine still ran very rough and stalled a few times.  Someone at the dealership told me that if I jump started the battery or replaced and installed a new battery incorrectly that I could damage electrical components.  Is this true?  Can you tell me what electrical components can be damaged?  Please help.  Thank you.

Installing or jumping a battery the wrong way could damage the CPU(the computer of the car). I did that in my younger days and it would run like shit but it ran but i needed a new cpu afterwards
