I would definately soup it up a bit. You don't need anything wild, but crate V8's aren't much more expensive than a rebuilding old engines if you don't get a really high horsepower one, and really the old 6 cylinders didn't get great gas mileage anyway. As far as value goes it is hard to say without more info. I got my 74 nova with a 5 year old paint job, no visable rust, and solid running engine for $1800, but that was 7 years ago. 72's tend bring a higher price than 74's, so I would say you could get up to $2,000 if there is no rust and a good interior.
