Check the flex plate, they can crack, check torque converter bolts also, but it sounds like a cracked flex plate...

Checked the flex plate and torque converter bolts, wasn't it. Very stumped by this as I have about four other mechanics looking at it and can't seem to pinpoint the problem. Tried putting it in neutral while roar was happening and had no effect. New shifter, but no vibration through shifter.

Can you explain a bit more on this? Very interested. Any vibration that you can feel? Does this happen when you are driving or is it there when in park, does it go away at all? It's not the fan clutch engaged? The cracked flex plate you would have noticed a vibration,I thought that was it.
