2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$60k Mercedes-Benz.

2024 Honda Passport Reviews Summary

While many automakers resort to daring designs or flashy tech in their efforts to stand out amid a crowded midsize SUV market, Honda takes a different approach. The 2024 Honda Passport has been refreshed for this year, but few would notice. There are no big-screen TVs in this SUV, no futuristic materials or shocking styling choices. Instead, the Passport goes simple: a proven engine, easy-to-use technology, and enough (but not too much) capability to make it appealing in all weather.

The Honda Passport’s V6 engine makes impressive power, and the TrailSport trim level tested in this review adds extra capability courtesy of some all-terrain tires and an off-road-tuned suspension. Although its 2024 refresh doesn’t make the Honda Passport a segment leader in any specific category, it will still find plenty of buyers who want a practical, spacious, safe, and reliable crossover SUV.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

2024 Honda Passport

6/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC underwent a generational redesign, maintaining a familiar look to keep its loyal fanbase content. Designers made subtle changes, such as repositioning door handles and narrowing the headlights for a more aggressive appearance. The taillights were updated with a connecting trim piece, and the rear design saw less chrome and a more pronounced trunk kick. The GLC Coupe retained its distinctive fastback roof, and the grille differentiated AMG models from the GLC 300. Inside, the GLC boasted a luxurious interior with two-tone leather, wood-and-metal dash treatments, and an abundance of technology, making it a gadget-heavy yet sumptuous space.

In contrast, the 2024 Honda Passport retained much of its previous design, with minor tweaks like a more upright grille and squared-off corners. The Passport offered three trims in Canada, all equipped with AWD and identical touchscreens. The TrailSport trim, tested here, featured all-terrain tires and rugged styling cues, though it was more about appearance than off-road capability. Inside, the Passport had a straightforward design with physical controls and an 8-inch touchscreen. The TrailSport trim added black leather with orange stitching, maintaining a simple yet functional interior with ample storage and durable materials.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2024 Honda Passport

7/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous V6 model. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system enhanced performance, while the GLC 300 offered 255 hp. Both models had 4Matic AWD and a nine-speed automatic transmission, with the GLC 43 using an AMG Speedshift MCT for faster shifts. The performance suspension provided improved handling but a firmer ride, making it less ideal for daily commuting.

The 2024 Honda Passport retained its naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Managed by a nine-speed automatic transmission, it offered smooth acceleration. The TrailSport trim had wider tracks and off-road-tuned suspension, with Honda’s iVTM4 AWD system and traction management. While road noise was noticeable at highway speeds, the Passport’s steering was precise. It boasted a towing capacity of 2,268 kg, surpassing some competitors but falling short of others like the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2024 Honda Passport

10/10

The Mercedes-Benz GLC’s cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled towards the driver. Standard features included heated front seats with memory functions, while cargo space measured 620 litres, expanding to 1,680 litres with folded seats. The GLC Coupe offered less space, with 545 litres expanding to 1,490 litres.

The Honda Passport excelled in cargo capacity, offering 1,430 litres behind the rear seats and expanding to 2,854 litres with folded seats. It comfortably seated five adults, with ample cupholders and a redesigned centre console for more storage. The Passport’s interior was practical, with a focus on utility and comfort.

Technology

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

2024 Honda Passport

6/10

The GLC featured an 11.9-inch touchscreen with the MBUX infotainment system, offering voice commands, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Optional features included a Burmester sound system and augmented reality navigation.

The Passport had an 8-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While responsive, the screen felt small for the cabin size. Navigation was limited to the Black Edition trim, and the audio system was less impressive compared to competitors.

Safety

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2024 Honda Passport

7/10

The Mercedes-Benz GLC earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, with standard features like active brake assist and Pre-Safe. Optional advanced driver-assistance systems were available.

The Honda Passport included standard safety features like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control. However, it received lower ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, missing out on Top Safety Pick status.
