2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2023 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

The rear-seat room is cramped and the cargo space is tight in this subcompact SUV, but the tradeoff is an appealing design, a classy and high-quality interior, and enjoyable driving dynamics, especially with the available turbocharged engine. Imagine what a Mazda 3 hatchback would be like with a raised suspension and thick lower body cladding, and you'll get the gist of the 2023 CX-30.

Look and feel

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

9/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge adhered closely to traditional automotive design, making the transition from internal combustion engines to electric power as seamless as possible for consumers. From the outside, it closely resembled its gasoline counterpart, with subtle differences like a solid panel in the grill, enlarged fuel-filler flap for the charge port, and the absence of tailpipes. The XC40 maintained its stylish appearance with features like Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and a floating roof illusion, all while offering a high-quality exterior finish.

Inside, the XC40 showcased Volvo's Scandinavian design sensibility, creating an airy and roomy cabin despite its compact SUV classification. The harmonious design of the dashboard elements, from the HVAC vents to the centre stack touchscreen, contributed to its premium feel. Volvo's steady progression into the luxury automotive category was evident in the XC40 Recharge, which offered a genuine luxury experience with its impeccable assembly and finish.

The 2023 Mazda CX-30, available in four trim levels in Canada, presented a striking design with a long hood and dramatically drawn flanks, though its appearance was somewhat marred by excessive gray body cladding. The GT Turbo model, with its black wheels, added to the SUV's artful design, though the wheels tended to blend into the lower-body darkness. Inside, the CX-30 offered an upscale cabin with quality materials, including leather upholstery in higher trims, gloss black trim, and polished metal accents. The GT Turbo test car featured a tasteful combination of off-white leather and chocolate brown, giving it an entry-level luxury SUV feel.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was a thrilling drive, powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors, delivering 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque. This setup allowed the XC40 Recharge to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, impressive for a compact SUV. The gasoline-powered XC40 models, the T4 and T5, offered 0-100 km/h times of 8.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively, with standard AWD. The Recharge featured regenerative braking and a one-pedal drive option, enhancing energy efficiency and driving enjoyment. Its low centre of gravity and familiar suspension setup contributed to its stable and planted handling. The XC40 Recharge boasted a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge, with fast-charging capabilities.

The 2023 Mazda CX-30 offered a range of powertrains, starting with the base GX trim's 2.0-litre engine producing 155 horsepower. The GS and GT models featured a 2.5-litre engine with 191 horsepower, while the GT Turbo's turbocharged 2.5-litre engine delivered up to 250 horsepower on premium fuel. The CX-30's six-speed automatic transmission and AWD provided a smooth driving experience, though the powertrain could feel flat-footed in heavy traffic. The CX-30's suspension offered a soft ride, but its G-Vectoring Control Plus and excellent steering made it enjoyable on twisty roads. However, the small 48-litre fuel tank limited its range, requiring frequent refueling stops.

Form and function

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

3/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions and comfort features. The front trunk provided extra storage space, while the cabin featured ample cubbies and nooks for modern essentials. The front seats were comfortable, though the rear seats were a bit tight for a middle passenger. The XC40 Recharge offered up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2023 Mazda CX-30 provided standard dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a power moonroof in most models. The cabin was comfortable for the driver, though the front passenger seat lacked adjustability. Rear passengers had limited legroom, but the seatbacks were padded for comfort. Storage space was reasonable, with various bins and compartments throughout the cabin. The CX-30 offered 572 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1,280 litres with the rear seats folded, though these measurements were not impressive for the segment.

Technology

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

4/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a host of tech features, including Pilot Assist for highway driving and a heat pump to extend range. The 9.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel featured the Android Automotive operating system, with built-in Google services and OTA updates. However, the range display showed a percentage of charge rather than remaining kilometres, which could cause range anxiety.

The 2023 Mazda CX-30's Mazda Connect infotainment system had several flaws, including the lack of a touchscreen and conversational voice recognition. The centre console controls required quick glances, and the voice-recognition system was only partially effective. The system lacked a tuning knob, making it difficult to navigate radio stations. Despite these shortcomings, the 8.8-inch display was well-integrated, and the system offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and connected services.

Safety

2022 Volvo XC40

10/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge received the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ rating, with extensive standard safety features, including collision warning, blind-spot information, and lane-keeping assist. The XC40 Recharge also featured a new sensor platform and Volvo's Connected Safety system, enhancing its active safety capabilities.

The 2023 Mazda CX-30 earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, with improved side-impact crash protection and standard rear side airbags. The GX trim included blind spot monitoring, while higher trims offered adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and more. The GT and GT Turbo trims added advanced features like a surround-view camera and head-up display. The driving assistance systems worked well, though the forward-collision warning system could be overly sensitive.
