2022 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Once dismissed as a “cute ute,” the Toyota RAV4 has evolved into a compact SUV to reckon with. From a range of efficient powertrains to a roomy, flexible interior and stylish exterior, the RAV4 has the goods to compete with the best SUVs.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 continued the legacy of a model that had evolved significantly since its North American debut in 1996. Initially introduced as a compact alternative to larger SUVs, the RAV4 quickly gained popularity among young buyers, leading to the emergence of similar car-based SUVs. Over five generations, the RAV4 expanded in size and sophistication, transcending its "cute ute" origins to become a leading crossover SUV. The 2022 model, a continuation of the 2019 redesign, frequently topped SUV sales charts in Canada. Its exterior design, while blending with contemporary crossover aesthetics, featured distinctive angular wheel arches and expressive headlights, creating a playful yet aggressive look. The interior boasted a layered dash with contrasting textures and a user-friendly centre stack, complemented by unique design elements like a circuit-board-inspired pattern.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE underwent subtle exterior updates that might have gone unnoticed by many. The front grille featured clever Mercedes star logos, and changes to the headlights and taillights were more apparent when compared directly to the previous model. The GLE 450e, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, exuded elegance. Inside, the GLE 450e's cabin showcased luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality and robust cabin experience. The GLE's interior was a testament to Mercedes' commitment to luxury and comfort, making it a standout in its segment.
