2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Once ridiculed and now increasing in popularity at an alarming rate, the SUV coupe, a new vehicle type originated by BMW and copied by others to varying degrees of success, is taking over gated suburban enclaves. From Acura (remember the ZDX?) to Volvo (C40 Recharge coming right up), automakers are trying the concept on for size, and it doesn’t always fit. However, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, a low-roofed version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV, is one recipe that works.

2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 subcompact crossover is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE presented a design that was neither offensive nor groundbreaking, with its Selenite Gray paint and 22-inch forged aluminum wheels giving it a sporty yet sophisticated look. The SUV's styling, reminiscent of an athletic sneaker, was complemented by polished brightwork, making it visually appealing from a front three-quarter perspective. Inside, the AMG GLE 53 Coupe offered a luxurious experience with high-end materials, including Nappa premium leather and a Dinamica simulated suede headliner. The dual-screen instrumentation and infotainment design added a high-tech touch, although the lack of traditional controls required some acclimatization for new users.

In contrast, the 2023 BMW X1 felt like a refined evolution of its predecessor, with a larger, squarer kidney grille and flush door handles enhancing its robust appearance. The X1's exterior colour palette was more dynamic, offering 13 options, including the striking Portimao Blue. Inside, the cabin exuded a premium feel with the BMW Curved Display and SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings. The M Sport Package added sport seats and an M leather steering wheel, while the Premium Essential Package included a panoramic moonroof and wireless charging. The interior design was clean and uncluttered, with a sophisticated floating centre armrest and aluminum-finished door handles.

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 engine, delivering 429 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 384 pound-feet of torque from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm. The EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system provided additional power and improved fuel efficiency, with a consumption rate of 12.7 L/100 km. The AMG GLE 53 Coupe featured a SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system, offering various driving modes and an optional AMG sport exhaust system. The adaptive damping control air suspension and AMG Active Ride Control suspension enhanced performance, while the speed-sensitive variable-ratio power steering made urban driving easier. The GLE Coupe excelled in Sport+ mode, showcasing its performance capabilities on challenging roads, although its size and weight were noticeable drawbacks.

The 2023 BMW X1 received a power boost with its 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the X1 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and tow up to 1,587 kilograms. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission provided a more engaging driving experience, especially with the M Sport Package's paddle shifters. The Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems minimized body roll, giving the X1 a hatchback-like agility. The X1's fuel economy was rated at 9.6 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 combined, with Premium fuel recommended.
