2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves rolled across the country. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying a Natural Resources Canada-rated 51 kilometres of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

2023 Dodge Durango Reviews Summary

The evolution of the Dodge Durango exemplifies how the Stellantis brand has evolved from a mainstream competitor to Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, and Toyota into a niche brand emphasizing muscle-car attitude.

The Durango was Dodge's first modern SUV, arriving for the 1998 model year as the brand's entry into the midsize SUV segment. The current, third-generation Durango dates all the way back to the 2011 model year. But, as Dodge has found with the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, a vehicle's lifespan can be greatly extended with an added dose of horsepower.

The 2023 Dodge Durango lineup starts with the base SXT trim level and moves up through the GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392. Changes for 2023 for Canada include standard heated front seats and heated steering wheel and some new colours (bringing the total colour palette to nine).

However, the big news for 2023 is the return of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and its devilish supercharged V8 engine. The Hellcat was previously available only for the 2021 model year as a limited edition, but now it's a regular production model. That being the case, the Hellcat ended up as our test vehicle for this Dodge Durango review.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

5/10

2023 Dodge Durango

9/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was a unique offering in the minivan segment, especially for those seeking a plug-in hybrid option. Despite its minivan status, which some might find less appealing compared to SUVs, the Pacifica Hybrid provided practical features like sliding side doors, making it convenient for families. Its design, while not particularly striking, was functional, and the interior offered a sense of quality with its black Nappa leather. However, the styling was considered somewhat dated compared to more modern, angular designs. The Pacifica Hybrid was priced on the higher side, with the Limited trim reaching $64,960, but federal and provincial EV rebates helped make it more affordable.

In contrast, the 2023 Dodge Durango maintained its familiar yet attractive design, avoiding the oversized grille trend and opting for a sleek, car-like appearance. The Durango's styling was enhanced in the SRT models with subtle yet distinctive features like a Viper-like hood and unique wheels. The interior, while not as distinctive as the exterior, offered a comfortable and well-equipped space, especially in higher trims like the Citadel and SRT Hellcat. The Durango also expanded its colour palette for 2023, adding new options like Frostbite and Night Moves, which added to its visual appeal.

Performance

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2023 Dodge Durango

9/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a 3.6-litre V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system, delivering a total of 260 horsepower. The electric drive system provided immediate torque, and the van could travel up to 51 kilometres on electric power alone. The Pacifica Hybrid's regenerative braking system helped extend its range, achieving an average fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres. While the driving experience was not particularly exciting, the powertrain's efficiency and seamless transition between electric and gasoline power were commendable.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine producing up to 295 horsepower. The 5.7-litre Hemi V8, standard on the R/T trim, delivered 360 horsepower and a classic V8 rumble. The SRT 392 model featured a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with 475 horsepower, while the SRT Hellcat boasted a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 with 710 horsepower, achieving a 0-100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds. The Durango's performance was impressive, especially in the SRT models, though its size made it less agile on twisty roads. The adaptive-damping suspension and Brembo brakes provided confidence-inspiring handling.

Form and function

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

2023 Dodge Durango

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, offering three comfortable rows of seats and ample cargo space. The interior featured quality materials, triple-zone climate control, and thoughtful storage solutions. The second-row seats were more comfortable than the standard Pacifica's Stow n' Go seats, though they required removal to maximize cargo space. The Pacifica Hybrid provided 914 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,477 litres with the third row folded, and up to 3,978 litres with the second row removed.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered seven-seat or six-seat configurations, with headroom and legroom comparable to other midsize SUVs. However, its cargo space was less than some competitors, with 487 litres behind the third row, 1,226 litres with the third row folded, and 2,409 litres behind the first row. The Durango excelled in towing capacity, with V6 models capable of towing up to 2,812 kilograms and V8 models up to 3,946 kilograms. While the Durango lacked a power-folding third row, it offered generous small-item storage and a power liftgate.

Technology

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

2023 Dodge Durango

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the ability to program five user profiles. The system was responsive, though the voice recognition technology was inconsistent. The Pacifica Hybrid also offered a 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and an available rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV. The surround-view camera system and parking assist features added convenience, though the latter was not a substitute for driving skills.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on lower trims, while higher trims featured a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5. The system was user-friendly and responsive, with added personality in the SRT models. The Performance Pages app provided performance data, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system was available on higher trims. The Durango's tech updates kept it competitive despite its age.

Safety

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2023 Dodge Durango

4/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasted a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. However, the adaptive cruise control system needed refinement, particularly in recognizing lane departures and moderating speed in traffic.

The 2023 Dodge Durango received mixed safety ratings, with a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a "Marginal" score in the IIHS driver-side small overlap front test. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, but other driver-assist technologies were not standard across all trims.
