2021 Kia K5 Reviews Summary

Sedans are now the most exciting new cars in the mainstream market. They are to crossovers today what craft beer was in the early 2000s. They’re not on every corner anymore because North Americans prefer trucks over cars, but sedans like the 2021 Kia K5 are refreshing to see, surprisingly good to drive, and will make you look cultured and smart without having to try. The K5—and its new name—replaces the Optima and upgrades nearly everything in the pursuit of style and performance. It’s one of the best midsize sedans out there.

2022 BMW 3 Series Reviews Summary

Four years ago, the seventh-generation BMW 3 Series sedan arrived wearing an evolutionary design and a traditionally conservative appearance. While BMW has expanded the lineup to add plug-in hybrid and performance-tuned models and has tweaked the car’s available colours and features, the 2022 3 Series remains essentially the same as it has since 2019. This year, BMW makes minor changes to the standard and optional equipment lists.

Look and feel

2021 Kia K5

8/10

2022 BMW 3 Series

9/10

The 2021 Kia K5 represented a significant shift in Kia's design philosophy, moving away from the drab and uninspired sedans of the past. With its fastback form and striking GT-Line trim, the K5 was a visual standout, reminiscent of the Audi A5 Sportback. The design was the brainchild of Peter Schreyer, a former Audi designer, who infused the K5 with a sporty and sophisticated aesthetic. The car featured unique taillights, a sleek honeycomb grille, and a polished black trim that wrapped around the D-pillars, giving it a distinctive and modern look. Despite some fake air vents and exhaust tips, the K5's proportions and details made it a head-turner, especially with its lower and longer stance compared to the outgoing Optima.

Inside, the K5 continued to impress with a driver-focused interior that exuded sportiness and quality. The GT-Line trim offered a flat-bottom steering wheel, polished black trim, and quality materials throughout. The dash was cleverly designed with a Supra-style divider and angled elements that enhanced the driving experience. While the standard analog gauges and 8-inch touchscreen were adequate, the interior felt upscale, with vinyl seats that mimicked leather and padded surfaces. The K5's interior design and materials were a step above many competitors, offering a level of style and quality that was often missing from other brands.

The 2022 BMW 3 Series, particularly the M340i xDrive, was a testament to BMW's commitment to performance and luxury. The M340i featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology, delivering 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and M Sport differential, provided exhilarating performance and impressive fuel efficiency. The M340i's driving dynamics were enhanced by its M Sport suspension, variable sport steering, and optional Adaptive M Suspension, making it a joy to drive on winding roads. BMW claimed a 0-100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds, and the car's handling and responsiveness were top-notch, offering a thrilling driving experience.

The interior of the M340i was equally impressive, with power-adjustable front sport seats that provided excellent support and comfort. The driving position was perfect, and the thick-rimmed steering wheel added to the car's sporty feel. Rear seat passengers enjoyed adequate legroom, and the three-zone automatic climate control system ensured comfort for all occupants. The 481-litre trunk offered ample cargo space, and the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats added versatility. While the M340i lacked ventilated front seats, the overall interior design and materials were of high quality, with a focus on driving enjoyment rather than luxury.

Performance

2021 Kia K5

6/10

2022 BMW 3 Series

10/10

The 2021 Kia K5, particularly in the GT-Line trim, offered a sporty appearance but fell short in terms of performance. The GT-Line lacked paddle shifters and had a softer suspension, resulting in a less engaging driving experience. The standard 1.6-litre turbo-four engine produced 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, providing adequate power for daily driving. The eight-speed automatic transmission was responsive, though not always smooth. The K5's fuel efficiency was commendable, with an estimated 9.2 L/100 km in the city and 6.9 on the highway. The GT trim promised more power with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine delivering 290 horsepower, but its front-wheel-drive setup limited its handling capabilities.

In contrast, the 2022 BMW 3 Series, specifically the M340i, excelled in performance. The turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology delivered 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, providing exhilarating acceleration and impressive fuel efficiency.

The infotainment system was user-friendly, with an optional 10.25-inch display. The K5's trunk offered 434 litres of cargo space, making it practical for everyday use.
