2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally charged solution.

2021 Hyundai Kona Reviews Summary

After three years on the market, the Hyundai Kona continues to wow with great features, strong styling, and decent specs. Hyundai offers the Kona in several trims: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate. A Hyundai Kona Electric model is available as well, but we'll cover that in a separate overview. A high-performance new Hyundai Kona N will be available for the 2022 model year.

The Hyundai Kona competes with subcompact SUVs that include the Kia Soul, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30, Subaru Crosstrek, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue, and Toyota C-HR. Given its size and price, buyers may also cross-shop the larger Hyundai Tucson. New car buyers have many other choices, then, but the Kona still stands out as a value-forward crossover with plenty of standard features.

Look and feel

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2021 Hyundai Kona

7/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's commitment to delivering a premium experience beyond mere claims. This model year saw enhancements such as more standard equipment, improved cabin aesthetics, and noise reduction measures. The turbocharged engine received a torque boost, and AWD models gained an off-road traction feature. With prices ranging from $27,950 to $41,900, the CX-5 offered trims like GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature. The Signature trim, with its Nappa leather and real wood accents, exuded luxury, although the Caturra Brown leather lacked contrast against the predominantly black interior.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona, on the other hand, embraced a playful and unique design, appealing to younger buyers. Its front end featured a busy arrangement of lights, while the rear maintained a more conventional crossover look. Inside, the Kona balanced fun with functionality, offering neat seat patterns and a straightforward layout. Higher trims provided leather options, and the infotainment system was user-friendly, with a touchscreen positioned high on the dash for easy access.

Performance

2020 Mazda CX-5

2021 Hyundai Kona

7/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 came with a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. FWD was standard on lower trims, with AWD available. The GT Turbo and Signature trims featured a turbocharged engine, delivering up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Despite its 1,734-kilogram curb weight, the CX-5 Signature accelerated confidently. However, its fuel efficiency was lower, averaging 10.6 L/100 km during testing. The CX-5's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced driving engagement, but excessive body motions detracted from the overall thrill.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 195 hp and 195 lb-ft. The base engine used a six-speed automatic transmission, while the turbo engine had a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. FWD was standard on lower trims, with AWD available. The Kona's handling was surprisingly confident, providing an engaging driving experience. Fuel consumption ratings were competitive, with the turbo engine and AWD achieving 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km city/highway/combined.

Form and function

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

2021 Hyundai Kona

6/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5's interior aimed for an upscale feel, with features like heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat in the GS trim. The GT trim added ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, while the Signature trim offered Nappa leather and genuine wood trim. However, the CX-5's interior was more cramped compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Cargo space measured 875 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,687 litres with the seats folded.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona provided decent front-seat headroom and legroom, with controls easily accessible. The rear seats offered good headroom but limited legroom. The Kona's cargo space was limited, though the rear seats could be folded to increase capacity. Small-item storage was generous, with large door pockets and a spacious centre console.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which, while upscale, required acclimation. The GX trim had a 7-inch touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. The GT trim added a 10-speaker Bose sound system and navigation, while the Signature trim included a surround-view camera. The system's controls were not ideal, and voice recognition was unreliable.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona came with an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offered a 10.25-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM radio, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with simple navigation and responsive software.
