2020 Ford Edge Reviews Summary

The Ford Edge isn’t exactly memorable, which isn’t a bad thing. It isn’t a good thing either. Cars can be remembered for attractive design, fun driving dynamics, or being a solid value. They can also be remembered in a negative light for a polarizing design, poor build quality, or being unsafe to the point of scandal. But the 2020 Ford Edge is just... there. It is a midsize two-row SUV that doesn’t offend, but also doesn’t “wow.” But just as critically, the Edge is getting long in the tooth. In the SUV segment, constant iteration is necessary for survival, and the Edge is in need of a redesign.

But in lieu of new blood, Ford has done well to keep the Edge fitted with the latest infotainment and safety technology. It also offers a performance variant, called the Edge ST. This is something that you won’t find in the Edge’s competitors, the Nissan Murano and Honda Passport. But is it enough to keep the Edge relevant against its more contemporary rivals? Read on to find out.

2020 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

From an impressive customer care program to a lineup of luxury vehicles focused on catering to and coddling its clients, Lincoln is carving a niche for itself in a space the automaker has referred to as “quiet luxury.” With the discontinuation of both the Continental and MKZ sedans after the 2020 model year, Lincoln will now rely on a lineup of four SUVs to continue its quest for success. Of those SUVs, the 2020 Lincoln Navigator is the flagship setting the course for the future.

2020 Ford Edge

7/10

2020 Lincoln Navigator

9/10

The 2020 Ford Edge, introduced initially in 2006, was based on the Ford Fusion sedan platform, offering a car-like ride with ample cabin space. By 2020, the Edge had undergone a styling update in 2019, which gave it a fresh look, though it lagged behind competitors like Honda and Toyota in terms of redesign frequency. The Edge's exterior featured angular headlights and a large trapezoidal grille, reminiscent of the Fusion. Inside, the cabin showed signs of aging, with a layout unchanged since 2015, despite subtle updates. The centre console's awkward button arrangement and heavy use of hard plastics detracted from the otherwise good cabin quality, which included soft-touch materials and solid fit-and-finish. The Edge was available in SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST trims, each offering a range of features from the SYNC 3 infotainment system to driver assistance features under the Ford Co-Pilot360 banner.

In contrast, the 2020 Lincoln Navigator stood out with its luxurious design, sharing a platform with the Ford Expedition but featuring distinct styling elements. The Lincoln Embrace lighting system and lattice-type grille insert with an illuminated star logo were unique to the Navigator. The SUV's interior, especially with the Luxury Package, boasted 30-way Perfect Position front seats and a dashboard with mid-century modern styling cues. The Navigator's digital instrumentation, 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, and piano-key transmission controls set it apart from the Expedition. A panoramic glass roof and high-quality materials added to the luxurious feel. The Navigator Reserve trim, available in standard and long-wheelbase versions, offered ample space and comfort, making it a convincing flagship SUV.

Performance

2020 Lincoln Navigator

7/10

The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, provided solid low-end acceleration, though it struggled at higher speeds. The Edge's suspension was designed to handle rough roads, offering a refined and engaging driving experience. The sporty Edge ST variant featured a 2.7-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. The ST's performance was enhanced by a Sport mode, which improved throttle response and transmission mapping, and an available ST Performance Brake Package.

The 2020 Lincoln Navigator, on the other hand, was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine, generating 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This engine, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided strong acceleration and a subtle engine note. The Navigator's four-wheel drive and multiple Lincoln Drive Modes tailored the powertrain to various driving conditions. With a maximum towing capacity of 3,764 kilograms, the Navigator featured Pro Trailer Backup Assist for easier trailer handling. Despite its size, the Navigator's body motion control was excellent, offering a hint of athleticism. However, its fuel efficiency was less impressive, averaging 14.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

Form and function

2020 Lincoln Navigator

9/10

The 2020 Ford Edge excelled in cabin layout, offering a commanding view of the road and ample storage compartments. The second-row seats provided generous head- and legroom, ensuring comfort without needing to adjust the front seats. While it lacked a third row, the Edge's two rows were spacious and comfortable. The cargo space was impressive, with 1,110 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 2,078 litres with the rear seats folded. The SEL and Titanium trims featured a hands-free foot-activated power rear liftgate.

In contrast, the 2020 Lincoln Navigator required a climb to enter, but once inside, it offered exceptional comfort and space. The optional Luxury Package included 30-way Perfect Position front seats, power-adjustable pedals, and a heated steering wheel. The second row offered a choice between a bench or captain's chairs, with the latter allowing for a large centre console. The Navigator's third-row seat provided unmatched legroom and thigh support. Cargo volumes were class-leading, with the standard model offering up to 2,928 litres and the longer Navigator L providing up to 3,407 litres.

Technology

2020 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2020 Ford Edge featured the SYNC 3 infotainment system as standard across all trims. This system included an 8-inch touchscreen with easy-to-use icons and a home button for seamless navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration were standard, allowing users to use their preferred maps app without extra cost. The Edge also came with two smart-charging USB ports and a rearview camera, with a semi-digital instrument panel available on higher trims.

The 2020 Lincoln Navigator, however, was equipped with the Sync 3 infotainment system, which was less impressive due to its slow loading times. Despite this, it offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Lincoln Connect services. The "Phone As A Key" technology allowed smartphones to function as vehicle keys. The Reserve's Luxury Package included a 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio system, providing a compelling audio experience. Additional technologies included a surround-view camera system and a head-up display.

Safety

The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a comprehensive array of safety features, including front and side-impact airbags, AdvanceTrac traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The Ford Co-Pilot360 safety system, standard on all trims, included automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The SEL trim offered the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package, adding adaptive cruise control and active lane centring. The Edge received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

The 2020 Lincoln Navigator featured the Lincoln Co-Pilot360 collection of advanced driver assistance systems as standard. This included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Navigator's adaptive cruise control operated with refinement, and the lane-keeping assistance system was subtle yet effective. The Navigator received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, though the IIHS had not tested the 2020 model.
