Phenomenal car to drive and own. Comfortable and well made, Easy to drive. Not the fastest car but certainly a well rounded car. Fair handling fair acceleration, and nice top speed. Easy to work on and parts are reasonably priced. Nov 17, 2011

This car's got tons of power once you get it up to highway speeds. When you floor the gas, it's like a drug. You can't get enough of it. On top of that, it sounds nasty as hell! The vr6 engine conversion made a huge difference, and also makes it a sleeper for people who don't know what it is!Nov 05, 2010

There is nothing to dislike about this light, turn hugging, torque spitting sleeping beast. Althought breaks could use some aftermarket work. Fun car to drive. Big bumper set-up with mud flaps make for dropped wide body look. Not your everyday obnoxious sounding 4 banger! turns heads too. Jul 07, 2010

Recaro seats are perfection. handles amazing (insane since I
added Coilovers and Neuspeed sways/roll bars). TT exhaust is
meaty. Classic GTI styling. Much cooler than every VW that has
been released after this car (Corrado exception 92-94). Roomy,
Rides Nice, Sounds Nice... is there a better car?
Best GTI made.
Modern Classic that will be worth mucho bucks soon.Mar 07, 2010

The Golf MK2 is a popular used car choice – and rightly so – with plenty of good cars still around. Its reliability and build quality have won many fans, while the performance of the GTis has allowed many to get sports car performance for family car prices. As such demand remains high.Sep 01, 2009

a true underestimated classic with impressive handling and possiblilities for more and still usable for everyday purposes - so no need to hide and only use on sundays..THIS ONE IS BUILT FOR USE - and still follows most more powerfull cars...YEE HAWJul 26, 2009

Like-Handles like a go kart, lots of aftermarket support, VW Scene is heady. The GTI was the first hot hatch, and it was one of the first cars to start the trend of performance oriented compact cars. The MK2 is arguably the best balanced chassis VW has ever produced.

I LOVE THIS CAR. Bought it used and put some money into it
so it would be reliable and boy has it been a faithful
workhorse. It is so much fun to drive, even with what it now
older technology. Mine is an 8v GTi and one thing that bugs
me? ALL GTi's are HATCHBACKS. Who named this group on
the forum anyway? You find me a Golf that is not a
hatchback and I will eat my words! Anyway my car gets
great gas mileage (26 around town, up to 36 on the highway)
and is reliable enough I would drive it anywhere. The Recaro seats are very
comfy with lots of support. I made my suspension stiffer
with the addition of Boge Pro Gas shocks and struts. I also
beefed up the exhaust with a header plus manifold. I love
the boxy styling, even more so than the Mk5 Golfs now. My
car had a/c issues when I bought it but after rebuilding the
system (something that is necessary when you let the system
run dry) it has been trouble-free for more than 10 years. Maybe this
car's only fault would be the airbox: it seems to go out on a
regular basis and is expensive to fix. (Update: after replacing 3 of them over the years, the MAF sensor has been fine) This could be related
to the Digifant fuel injection system on my particular car,
and there were two FI systems available. I think Motronic is
the other one. Anyway, with some research you could
probably figure out which one is best. The brakes are more than adequate.
Back seat is tight, but works for small kids although the safety is probably not the best due its lack of a rear end. For sheer Fun Factor vs. Cost of Ownership? MY MONEY WAS MORE THAN WELL
SPENT.Apr 14, 2009

This car is a boner on wheels.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.
No, seriously. It is. This is the epitome of classic german automotive styling. Compact, AERODYNAMIC (Lower drag coefficient than a corvette! hahaha), quick, comfortable.
There's no mystery here people. There's a reason it was called the "pocket rocket" back in it's day. ;) Aug 28, 2008

Good performance from an old hatchback, great fun to drive with excellent handling. Cool styling from GTi models. Ultra reliable, will easily cruise into 150k miles with minor maintenance, I get 40mpg on the motorway.
I swapped a 1.6 golf driver for this car and I have never looked back. This has power steering, onboard computer (which all works), it's cool getting miles per gallon readings from a 1990 car.
If you want a classy piece of motoring history, get one.Aug 10, 2008

This one was a 1989 16 valve version. It's a very fun car for sporty drives on twisty roads. It's not fast by today's standards but decent anyways. Maintenance costs next to nothing as parts are cheap and consumption is ok. But like so many 80's cars most have turned into rust. Finding one today that isn't completely rotten will be challenging.Jul 29, 2008

Runs a modified 220hp 2.9 VR6 engine, full respray in original Oak Green with extensive body smoothing. Full leather Recaro interior with Mk3 Golf dash conversion. Fully adjustable coilover suspension with upgraded roll bars and braces. Hand polished Porsche rims, the list goes on....... :-)Jun 04, 2008

When I traded in my used 1979 GTI in favour of a brand new 1990 model GTI, I was pretty
stoked. I loved the older one but it had older car problems and this was my first brand
new car. It was between this and a slightly used supercharged Toyota MR2 and a Mk1
Mazda Miata. It's fair to say I had pretty good taste in cars as they all became iconic cars.
While the Miata was a soft top and was very sexy and the MR2 went like stink, I was having
a love-affair with VWs so I went with a blend of good-looking, practicality and fun.
VWs have always been brilliantly-made cars, and ever since then I've always done the "VW
door test" with new cars as the vacuum-seal and satisfyingly muted "whump" sound of a
VW door closing indicated pure quality to me (compared to, for eg, a Honda Civic of its
time which sounded decidedly plasticy and cheap).
If I could've afforded it, I would've gone for the 16-valver (which also had a nicer
grill/headlights) but I loved driving the Golf nonetheless. Great handling, good stereo,
excellent brakes and a peppy 1.8L engine.
I would highly recommend a Golf, though in recent years they've become a bit expensive
and aren't breaking new ground as much.Mar 23, 2008

I Love this car, it handles well and I love driving it. It is however getting old so parts are starting to wear out.
Im fixing things as I go along and plan to do a full re-furb, inside and out.
The pic is of a 3dr 16v GTi where as mine is a 5dr 8v GTi.
I'd recommend a Golf to anyone who was hesitant about buying one, thet're great fun to drive and very reliable.Mar 17, 2008
