Performance- could use more powerful engine but current is fine also.
Build quality- Built well, smaller repairs are common.
Appearance- looks of people are guaranteed.
CoO- it could be cheaper.
Fun Factor- happy face is a must have with this car.Sep 22, 2012

Was suposed to be a car just for winter, but there was to much rust on it to be road-legal, so I used it just from time to time in the woods. It's easy to drift and sounds great with no exhaust at all, almost like a racing carOct 31, 2010

Not much for acceleration 0-60 in like 9 seconds. but after 60 it picks up to 120 easy and is steady at 80. Held up for 15 year before it slowly start to fall apart. Exterior the paint stayed well into its 20th birthday. Interior leather started to die at 16. Gas mileage for fair for its time. It was economy model so It was getting 18-20 mpg not bad for 1988 but there are better cars now. Maintenance was expensive and was quite a drag to find good mechanics who know this car these days. It was a fun car being that it was RWD and it took corners quite well. More of a cruiser.Jun 27, 2010

Probably one of the most sturdy cars I
have ever been in. My car has its
problems, most parts that hadn't failed
in the 25 years of life (most things in
there are still the original parts the
car was purchased with) and in the 134.5k
I got the car with are starting to
decline in performance but still going to
be good for another 50k at least.
Love the chassis, the styling, the looks.
My car's paint is TOAST but the interior
and mechanical parts are in great
condition. BUNCH of them in Pick'n'Pulls
in my area, and a lot of older BMW's (and
part distributers) in California still,
so parts take a bit of looking but aren't
impossible to find.May 10, 2010

Def one of the cars I loved to drive - big and brawny - quick and athletic on its toes - superb handling - sounds great and looked like an old mans car so I was never on the radar of the local constabulary ... lots of Racing Dynamics and Metric Mechanic stuff on it Dec 12, 2009

Hunk o' German metal. By the time I got it, it was well past its prime. it still ran strong, but all the secondary systems were breaking. Fun car, but destined to end up a parts car for a more maintained E28.Mar 10, 2009

I love this car- it is a 1987 BMW 535i. It still maintains 25+mpg on the freeway with regular gas, and even with over 206,000 miles it feels very solid over 140mph. It keeps up with modern cars easily, but has much more character. Many people do not know what it is before they see the BMW Rondel, which is another bonus. 0-60 takes under 6.5 seconds. and I have kept it stock. The inline 6 sounds amazing, and I have never had any problems with it (I bought it 6 years & 56,000 miles ago). With routine maintance, these cars will go a VERY long way! These cars are also loaded with features- even if they are base models. The computers have hidden tricks to them that mean you can change things without having to go to the dealer all the time, which adds to the simplicity of the ergonomics and the customizing of how you want your car to fit you without all the buttons and computer screens in modern cars. The downside is that the car originally came with metric rims and tires, which meant I had to replace the wheels to get tires if I wanted to spend less than $450 per tire. I would HIGHLY recommend these cars as a starter car for someone, or a true enthusiast. If you get one in bad shape though, the costs can add up quickly, so be sure to inspect it and certify the history.Oct 12, 2008

Awesome super saloon. 218bhp, 6 cylinders. Scarily fast!! Came with a nasty eighties bodykit which I removed. Had a custom red and black leather interior. Jul 13, 2008

I have bought two of these...they are well made and long-lasting. I have had much newer cars that the options went out on. These cars still have all there options over twenty years later.Apr 26, 2008

Daily driven through rain, sleet, and snow and the heat of the summer... for years.
It's even doing camping duty, packed to the gills, climbing the PA peaks, loaded down
with supplies, people, and firewood.Apr 17, 2008

A masterpiece when new, and now aging nicely into and everyday clasic, has travelled over 300,000 kms not a drop of oil tight steering and gearbox, a very well built car good for another 300,000 with schedualed servicing being the only maintanence we have ever put into her Apr 15, 2008

It was actually a 1984 533i, but that option was not available from the list. CarGurus are actually real morons. They are missing the bulk of BMWs line up. Dec 24, 2007
