I love everything about this Jeep, from the style to the drivability. Even at 18yrs and 250k miles overall, this Jeep is still in tip top shape, from the inside out. It stills drives smooth and has very little rust, granted it has been very well maintained, but it has never been garage kept and still not a lot of rust(only a small amount on bottom of back hatch where water tends to settle) Sep 17, 2014

I like the fact that it had 4 wheel drive when you need it and not always engaged like some of the newer vehicles. It also has a part time mode for when it's a little slick out with rain or snowApr 03, 2014

the Jeep has been one of the best 4x4s I have had. It will go just about anywhere I needed it to go. It is a comfortable and easy vehicle to drive. my wife and grand kids are safe on the bad roads in winter and it has been pretty dependable.Oct 02, 2013

These things are ROCK SOLID, with tons of room for upgrades. Extremely comfortable. From the stock 150 AMP alternator, to the Infinity speaker system, to the heated leather seats, you will fall in love with every aspect of this Jeep.
They have a new Jeep commercial, showing how even despite the weather you will be the one who still makes it to work. Living in Maine, I can tell you this is the honest truth for any year Jeep with 4WD. And this Jeep has AWD.
Owning a vehicle like this and expecting good MPG is like eating McDonalds 5 days a week and expecting to lose weight. There is a song by Lonestar called "What About Now" and he refers to "The last dinosaur that Detroit made". This is the 98 Jeep GC Limited.
The only weak point is the original Quadra-Trac transfer case. It doesn't have a huge flaw that would make anyone stray, but part of it will wear out eventually which causes a minor issue when making extremely HARD TIGHT low speed turns, like in a parking lot.
This Jeep turns heads as it is, and garners respect and enthusiasm by any passenger. With some upgrades (which I have done almost everything except lift it) this thing will get people talking to you at every gas station, even pulled over by police who just want a peak under the hood.
If you ever get a chance to snag one of these up in mint condition, and don't care about MPG and want a real SUV (not a SMV, Soccer Mom Vehicle), pick one up. Or any of the other many Jeeps out there, the original and best SUV.Dec 11, 2012

This Jeep has been a very reliable vehicle. I have always liked the look of these Jeeps. Nothing fancy but looks like it could handle anything in it's path. There are some noises while driving but thats too be expected in a SUV. Acceleration is gradual but feels powerful. Solid Braking. I feel Safe putting my family in this vehicle and driving almost anywhere.Aug 03, 2012

Performance - it has performed great right up until we had to replace the engine. But then again I still can't complain because i have no clue how well the previous owners took care of it.
Build Quality - so far the only repairs are the brakes, muffler, engine, and drag link
Appearance - well the outer appearance is great, but once i took off the front bumper, there was evidence of the vehicle being in an accident.
Cost of Ownership - its getting about 18 mpg and we paid $2500 for it
Fun Factor - this is fun to drive but my only grip is that it handles too well in the snow lol. with it being all time 4 wheel drive it makes it hard to have fun lmao

This is a great SUV that is also able to be used as a daily driver for commuting to work. You can also have confidence knowing you will be able to get out of a ditch or snow bank etc... if something unfortunate does happen.
Gas mileage is not great, but expected for the type of vehicle. Dec 29, 2011

Pretty quick with the 5.2 Magnum v8, and very comfortable with the black leather interior. Gas mileage isn't great, 12-15 mpg in the city, and 20-22+ on the HWY if you keep it steady. It's the best thing off road, never gets stuck.Dec 03, 2011

This has been a great Jeep. Reliability has been pretty good. I've had the fuel pump go bad on me and the fan clutch and water pump, everything else has worked perfect. The transmission is starting to have a couple issues with shifting from 2nd to 3rd and it is a common problem with the vehicles but once rebuilt the rebuild kit comes with a better seal that fixes this problem.
The Orvis is fun to drive in the snow and performs excellent off-road. During the summer months it is kind of bland to drive because on-road handling is weak. I would never sell it and I'm going to try to keep it going forever.Feb 21, 2011

I love my jeep. The quality is excellent, even thought it is 15 years old. Performance is great. Cost of ownership is decent. Gas mileage isn't great, but I don't drive much, so it's alright. And this is the most fun car ever. :) May 07, 2010

This was my wife's car, though I got to drive it for work. The G.C. never let me down. Gas mileage was rotten (13, 14 in the city...it'd do 18-20 on the highway, though), but with the 318 V8 I really didn't care too much. Plenty of power for any situation...and it sounded great with the Flowmaster muffler. Handling was about what you'd expect out of an SUV...you're not going to go looking for any curvy roads to blast down. It never felt unsafe, though.
I've always loved the styling of the 1st gen. Grand Cherokee. It's standing the test of time well, I believe.
The interior was very nice...comfortable, soft leather seats with heat (I miss this a lot!), nice Infinity stereo, and the build quality was good. Only a few cheap trim pieces here and there.
We never had to do much to the Jeep, but when we did, replacement parts were inexpensive. It was starting to get a little worn out by the time we got rid of it, but it never let us down and was fantastic in the snow. I miss this car very much.
The only thing that could possibly top it is if I could find a relatively unabused 5.9 for sale somewhere...Oct 14, 2009

I love this car. It drives smooth, it's fairly quiet, it's
the sharpest turning car I've ever seen, it's built
very solid, I take it out and beat the crap out of it
all the time and nothing seems to really hurt it,
although the paint is quite scratched. It has great
suspension and it sits a fair ways above the ground,
the only thing sticking out from under it is the rear
differential. It's got both driver and passenger side
airbags, ABS, and a reinforced body so it's safer in
rollovers. Great car.Aug 12, 2009

I love everything about it, except gas milage gets at least around 17-18 miles a gallon. I don't like the fact that it's a automatic, but its a great vehicle..! I would def buy another one or a Wrangler..!!!May 31, 2009

This is a '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited I bought after I returned a '97 Laredo when its lease was over. Needless to say, I must like the potential of its chassis and thought a 4.9L V8 engine would be a better match (vs. the 4.2L inline 6 that came in the Laredo). The Limited was the top-of-the-line Grand Cherokee with all-time (viscous coupling)
AWD and leather(top grain, creamy smoth)/wood(fake) trim interior. Other improvements included the use of CV joints in the front transaxle and powered/heated memory seats. All these added luxury had transformed the vehicle from a regular SUV to a civilized ride. This was largely due to the creamy smooth power plant (reasonably quiet with plenty of low end torque), and revised spring/damping rates (the suspension now felt softer). Straight line acceleration was sport car fast and there was little body lean when cornering. However, due to its high centre-of-graviy, narrow track, and short wheel base (like most SUVs), abrupt weight transfers had prevented this vehicle from achieving sporty sedan level of handling. Daily driving and highway commutes were well mannered and sporty. Wind noise and road noise was noticeable but not intrusive. All controls felt positive and were easy to engage. The very sophisticated ventilation system was effective but just a touch noisy. Sitting position was as it supposed to be - upright with plenty of leg and head room. This vehicle was designed with exceptional off-road abilities and therefore suffered from having a fairly compact size (to achieve short overhang). There wasn't much "utility" in terms of trunk and passenger space. The full time AWD system did not provide any level of lock-up making driving in snow less than confidence inspiring (unless the low ratio final drive was engaged which will lock the centre differentia, good only for crawling speedl). Fuel efficiency was certainly not there as the fuel guage could be seen literally moving while enroute! The ride was not "luxury" like its premium quality appointment had suggested. As a result, I haven't owned another SUV since, but am at least tempted, only but 10 years later by the more evolved products where superb ride and performance are blended together (think Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes R Class). Best Car I have ever owned. Very reliable and will go any where.. Rain, snow, ice, mud, deep woods, it just goes.. Pulls like a mule.. I haven't gotten stuck with it ever.. I love my Jeep. Almost no maintance even after 175,000 miles, it just keeps on going. I will by another one, but untill my 4 month old son gets his licence I will keep driving this one. I have no doupt it will last that long and longer.Nov 22, 2008

This is my first car and it is AWESOME! It has 250,000+ miles on it and is is still running strong. Just a few minor upkeep repairs and the only major replacement was a new transmission but at over 250,000 miles, it was bound to need replaced sooner or later. It's tons of fun to take off road and the 4wheel drive is excellent, especially on our Ohio winter roads! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves to drive (on or off the road!) It has a ton of power for the size of the motor (4.0L) while keeping good gas mileage for its size, age and weight. (~18-23 mpg) It’s a keeper!Apr 18, 2008

This is a very solid car that I would recommend to anyone who asked. Mechanically, one of the best and most reliable anywhere. Good breaks, comfortable ride, and communicative steering add to this to make it a joy to drive. No problems whatsoever over the course of the 23,000 miles I put on it. If there is one drawback to owning this car, it is the poor fuel economy. I got an average of18 mpg, getting as much as 23 and as little as 13. However, I still highly recommend it as a sound, safe investment. Apr 08, 2008

There are only 15000 worldwide. It housed a Magnum 5.9 L V8 engine with an output of 245 hp and 345 lb·ft of torque, going from zero to 60 mph (100 km/h) in only 6.8 seconds making it the quickest SUV available that year. The straight-line performance of the 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 has been surpassed by Jeep only with the 2006 introduction of the 6.1 L SRT8 HEMI Grand Cherokee.Feb 03, 2008

Recently did an exhaust, suspension, wheel and tire upgrade to the original family rig we had. Love it even more now. It's a great ride, and does very well off road, even with the smallish suspension upgrade.Jan 30, 2008

We have a 1993 jeep grand cherokee with over 400,00 miles on it. We have very little in maintenance costs. It is very good in rain and snow. We no longer own this vehicle, but we know it has been a very dependable vehicle for someone else. The engine and transmission were never worked on or replaced. Aug 03, 2007

bought this car because I needed a good car for the snow. Frankly, I should have simply bought an audi. The build quality was terrible, handles like a mack truck, bad gas mileage - overall not much good to say about it.
Over the 3 years that I bought it, the air conditioner went, an axle bearing went as well as numerous other annoying problems.
While not a huge investment, I think I bought it for $28k or so, it just was not the right car for the situation. Frankly the next car I bought - an audi s4 had far more to offer (better handling in the snow, better gas mileage, far better reliability and generally just a hoot to drive.
So, unless you really need an suv (in which case I'd recommend a toyota 4runner) get an All wheel drive audi - far more fun....Sep 29, 2006
