Great value. Drive systems and parts from other well established Toyotas are at the heart of this crossover, the first crossover ever. An outstanding seating position and open cabin lend to excellent visibility. The car and parts are die hard and youll only have very little downtime should the maintenance schedule be kept up with. The cabin is loud and at highway speeds this can get annoying. Road noise is very penetrating in this vehicle. The interior trim and pieces are are stout and easily removed should you decide to install sound insulation, I advise you do.
Mine is the L so its equipped with leather, a sunroof, powered windows and locks as well as painted bumpers and cladding. The leather has seen better days.
Overall this vehicle has decent fuel economy, is very long lived, and actually pretty fun to drive. Feb 15, 2022

Overall I enjoy the RAV4 and while she's not the prettiest girl at the prom with a little dressing up she just might turn a head or two. I've installed several mods that make her handle better, off-road worlds better, and look much better.
Brakes are my only real complaint , the Japanese, Australian, and some European versions have disc brakes that weren't even an option here, WHY?
I work outdoors all over the place often driving on "jeep" trails and cross country and so far she's done well. She's no jeep but she hasn't gotten stuck yet. Handles well in the rain, haven't tried it on snow or ice yet.Feb 22, 2014

This is an awesome vehicle that works really well for me to work out of as I do maintenance and repair work. I love that the back door opens out that way I have extra head room when working out of the back. It will go anywhere and it is super reliable.Jan 21, 2013

I call it my snowflake. It does well but it isn't big enough for me. The fuel economy and reliability is up there which i like. I think this car is fun to drive though and i would reccomend it. Especially the convertible style for somewhere sunny (not alberta.)Feb 04, 2012

It has nice function to help with power, however not extremely powerful. the only downside is the amount of passenger space in the back seat. Severe engine repair could be a hassle, but it rarely has reason to need such heavy repair.Nov 23, 2011

great car has a lot of good qualities but for me it falls short in the power
department and backseat is to small otherwise it runs great handles good and
has good mpg and would be good for only a small familyNov 21, 2011

I was happy with this car since day one! I had researched Rav4's before purchasing a 97 in 1999. She was always reliable, safe, and without any major issues until she was older, which is why I ended up selling her. Best of all, she was SO fun to drive. I would purchase another RAV4 again, in a heartbeat! And I did in Jan 2012 (this review has been edited since original post)! I researched again, and bought a 2005, which I also love. Rav4's are just great overall!Sep 08, 2011

The acceleration isn't very much, the breaks work well but they squeak when wet. Overall though it is a good car for being 10 years old. Some people can't believe it works so well for being 10 years old. It has only been repaired once since I have had it and that was just to put new back breaks in. It is only like 20 dollars to fill it up and that lasts me about a week and a half. Dec 14, 2009

Good performance and relaible accelerates moderatly but good pickup..not that build quility but you will only take it to a garage once in two to three years..intrior is rabish but if paint it it looks like a new car..it is fun in little rocky area also in desert...Oct 13, 2009

Takes a bit to get up and go, but reliable and fun to drive about. Not that costly to run. Will need to repair occassional things such as power window motors soon and possibly brakes. Nice looking car, it has matching white bumpers and sunroof as extras. Easy to park.Sep 10, 2009

There isn't much I can say about my car, it gets me from point A to point B. I haven't had many maintenance issues with my car despite its age. We've used the car several times to move and I must say we've managed to haul a lot of stuff. The ride is a bit rough, as to be expected from an SUV, its especially bumpy and rather cramped in the rear seat. Mar 21, 2009

Although the Rav4 has sluggish acceleration, everything else about it's handling is amazing. It appearance also makes it stand out in the crowed and is very comfortable to drive. My parents had the this car for six years and I have had it for three and it has 211,000 miles on it and we have never had to do any major mechanical or cosmetic repairs to it. This car get great gas millage and is very fun to drive.Jan 28, 2009

IMO this car essential started off the whole SUV thing.
I still remember the huge shock when this car debut... it looks funky, different and interesting. They market it as a leisure fashionable off-roader with on road capability and a high driving position.... whatever that is, it seems to be very successful at the time.Sep 02, 2008

My wife loves this car because it looks good. I lke it because its a Toyota. I don't worry about it breaking down on her. This car replaced another 1997 RAV4 that she had that was totalled in a head on collision that she walked away from. We ended up buying the exact car, even down to the color all over again.Jul 28, 2008

love it... smooth, quiet ride.
Good on fuel & really nice to drive.
Has good acceleration & sticks to the road (yay for AWD!)
Haven't had any dramas with it so far (fingers crossed)
The only annoying thing is the spare tyre which is on the back door, it tends to rattle on rougher roads but thats about all really!Jul 23, 2008

I have never had any problems with my RAV4. It has been a very dependable car that helps conserve gas. I can typically travel over 400 miles on 1 tank of gas with a combination of city and highway.Jun 09, 2008

2.0 ltr petrol engine is more than powerful enough for this vehicle. for it's size it's actually quite a light car and has very impressive off road capabilities considering it's not a thoroughbred 4x4.Feb 08, 2008
