The Kia Sportage is the brand's longest running and most popular nameplate. Sales are on an upward trend, and it's easy to understand why.
The Sportage is big enough for family use, but not so large that it's unwieldy or difficult to park in the city or in an owner's garage. It's packed with useful technology and boasts bold styling that stands out in a sea of similarly shaped crossovers. In hybrid form, it’s also more efficient than the gas-only version.
Verdict: The 2026 Kia Sportage is sized right among compact crossover SUVs. It strikes an intriguing balance of roominess, comfort, and efficiency that ought to win over plenty of drivers.
There are more than enough nips and tucks to set the new 2026 Kia Sportage apart from its forebear. The SUV's front face receives most of the styling updates for the new model year with sharp, angular headlights and a blocky new grille that blends into a modern and stylish fascia. The Sportage has dramatic curves that culminate in wide and aggressive haunches over the rear wheels. The rear of the Sportage is defined by upward-slanted lines and shapes framing the LED taillights. Kia calls its design philosophy “Opposites United,” and while it’s busy, the overall result is a sharp-looking crossover that doesn’t resemble anything else in its class.
Note the off-road oriented X-Line packages are exclusive to the gas-only powertrain in Canada and not offered with the Sportage Hybrid.
The Kia Sportage Hybrid’s interior is similarly stylish. The dash is dominated by Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit design that features a curved 12.3-inch touchscreen display running the brand’s latest infotainment technology. The upper areas are fashioned from high-quality plastics, and, while there are several different textures and colours, the overall effect is harmonious.
The Sportage Hybrid SX has unique interior finishes to set it apart from lower trim levels. Saturn Black and Carmine Red interiors are available (note that the grey interior in our U.S.-spec test car is not offered in Canada). Synthetic leather is standard across the Sportage Hybrid line-up. We couldn’t physically sit in any other Sportage Hybrid trim levels, which in Canada also include EX and EX Premium before culminating with the top SX.
The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and a 47.7-kilowatt electric motor. Combined output is 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, which is up by five horsepower over the previous model year. In Canada, that power is sent to standard all-wheel drive (AWD) through a six-speed automatic transmission. The Sportage Hybrid is rated to tow 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds).
Around town, the Sportage Hybrid’s well of low-end torque from its electric motor helps it scoot around town with authority. Power tails off as the speeds increase, and the transmission doesn’t always respond to extra throttle with a downshift as quickly as it should. That means passing power on the highway can be a bit of a letdown.
We have yet to drive the 2026 Kia Sportage PHEV, but that model’s bigger 72-kilowatt electric motor and total combined horsepower of 268 likely means it’ll be a bit quicker than the regular Sportage Hybrid. Power for the non-hybrid Sportage comes from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine making 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic.
The 2026 Sportage Hybrid’s suspension is tuned for comfort, and we think that’s appropriate for the Sportage’s mission as an efficient people mover. Big bumps never make their way through the soft suspension and into the backs of the Sportage Hybrid’s occupants. Road noise in our SX test car was also quite low, making for a surprisingly serene cockpit even at highway speeds.
Sportage Hybrid models have 21 centimetres of ground clearance, which is sufficient to clear the kinds of rocks and ruts that drivers are likely to find on their way to the perfect campsite. A Terrain Mode button is new for 2026, which cycles between off-road settings including Snow, Mud and Sand. All Sportage Hybrids have Eco, Sport and a customizable MyDrive feature.
As a compact SUV, the Kia Sportage’s wheelbase is more than five centimetres longer than the Honda CR-V’s, and it has a similar overall length. This puts it in direct competition with the CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, two of the best-selling crossover SUVs in North America.
The 2026 Sportage Hybrid has plenty of room inside for four adults, and the second row can handle three across if the occupants don’t mind touching. The front seats in our SX test car were quite comfortable, and legroom in both rows was reasonable. There are plenty of little cubbies for storage up front, including obvious spots to store cell phones while driving and cupholders for all occupants.
Storage capacity maxes out at 2,087 litres with the rear seats folded down and the two-level cargo floor in its lowest position. It’s also possible to move the cargo floor up a small step to provide a flat load floor. With the rear seats in place, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid offers up to 1,119 litres of cargo space. To put the numbers into perspective, the Honda CR-V offers 1,113 litres in the rear and 2,166 litres with the second-row seats folded.
For buyers looking to do some comparison shopping in Kia’s own showrooms, the subcompact (and significantly cheaper) Seltos has up to 752 litres of cargo space behind the second row. The larger midsize Kia Sorento offers a small third row of seats that cut into its maximum cargo-carrying capabilities, leaving up to 1,274 litres of room behind the second row. The midsize Kia Telluride offers up to 601 litres of space behind its third row and 1,304 litres behind its second row but is, as you’d expect, more expensive and has much larger exterior dimensions.
Kia continues to use an overcomplicated set of touch-sensitive buttons to control common functions that a driver will need to interact with regularly. There’s a thin set of buttons and dials below the infotainment system on the centre console that is used for multiple functions, including climate control, and you need to hit one particular (and small) button to change between those functions. It’s unnecessarily confusing.
The 2026 Kia Sportage comes standard with a bright and colourful 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment package with navigation that was optional with previous Sportages. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported. The Sportage Hybrid SX trim level includes a 10-inch head-up display that helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road without needing to divert their attention to the dashboard.
All Sportage Hybrid models come with Kia Connect, a subscription-based technology package (free for the first three years) that adds the Kia Access App, which lets you use an Apple or an Android smartwatch to control entry and climate remotely, and a cloud-based mapping system that helps to avoid congested areas. Additional features can be added to Kia Connect, including a new one for 2026 that lets drivers customize their infotainment systems with effects inspired by their favourite NBA team.
A six-speaker audio system is standard equipment, and the Sportage Hybrid SX bumps that to a Harman Kardon surround sound system with 400 watts and eight speakers. Since we tested an SX model, we can’t compare the systems. We can say, though, that the upgraded audio package was excellent.
The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid comes standard with quite a few driver assist features, but some of the most advanced features aren’t available in the base model. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane following assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are included with all trims.
Buyers have to step up to the top SX trim level to get Kia’s Blind Spot View Monitor camera system, a more advanced forward collision warning system that includes Evasive Steering Assist, additional parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system and Highway Driving Assist 2. That last bit of technology is a semi-automated driving package designed to work on highways and includes automatic lane changing under the right conditions.
The 2026 Sportage Hybrid hadn’t been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of writing, but the previous version, regardless of powertrain, earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS and five stars from NHTSA.
In base EX trim, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid starts at $44,616 (all prices include a mandatory $2,100 destination charge and other fees) and the EX Premium trim starts at $47,616. For $51,116, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX comes with all the bells and whistles, and the full suite of Kia’s driver assist features. While it’s a big jump from an EX or EX Premium, the Sportage Hybrid SX feels like a premium compact crossover SUV.
Fuel economy for the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, 6.6 on the highway, and 6.7 L/100 km combined for all models. This is slightly higher than other compact hybrid SUVs, though the actual difference in fuel cost will be minimal.
