The Chevrolet Blazer EV is the automaker's long-awaited entry into the electric SUV field.
It may share a name with the gasoline-powered Blazer crossover SUV, but the Chevy Blazer EV is in fact a new vehicle based on the General Motors Ultium electric vehicle (EV) component set. It’s Chevy’s belated answer to the crosstown rival Ford Mustang Mach-E and other electric SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, and the Tesla Model Y.
Verdict: The Blazer EV offers unique style and impressive technology, but it doesn’t really move the needle when it comes to range, fast charging, or interior packaging

The Blazer EV is a dramatic new evolutionary stage for one of the oldest SUV nameplates. In its original K5 and compact S-10 forms, the Blazer was a truck-based off-roader like most early SUVs. That went out the window when Chevy brought the Blazer back as a car-based crossover for the 2019 model year. The Blazer EV takes some of the basic styling elements from that model (which will remain on sale alongside the electric version for the time being) and applies them to a new, EV-specific platform.
Like other EVs based on the General Motors Ultium component set, the Blazer EV is built around its battery pack. Engineers add or subtract battery modules for a given vehicle, and that determines the length of the wheelbase. The larger of the Blazer EV’s two available packs is the same size as the one in the Cadillac Lyriq, and so the two models share a fairly long 3,093-millimetre wheelbase. However, the Cadillac has somewhat different proportions that hide the elongated wheelbase a bit better. The Chevy looks like a stretch limo in comparison.
A tall hood, rejiggered version of the gasoline Blazer’s scowling front end, and boomerang-shaped taillights similar to those on the gasoline model combine to give the Blazer EV more attitude than rival electric SUVs. EVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6 have aerodynamic styling aimed at improving efficiency, but the Blazer looks like a proper SUV. It’s also about 18 cm longer and 10 cm wider than the Ford and Kia.
The Blazer EV launches in LT and RS trim levels, with different styling elements for each. The base LT is available with a colour-coordinated front fascia, which in white paint gives this electric SUV the aesthetic of an early 2000s Apple product launch. The Blazer EV RS gets a blacked-out front fascia and exterior accents. The LT gets standard 19-inch wheels, while RS models ride on 21-inch wheels. A forthcoming Blazer EV SS will get a unique front fascia, a black roof, and 22-inch wheels to go with its unique mechanical elements.
RS and SS models also get a distinctive interior with large round air vents similar to what you'll find on the current gasoline Blazer and the soon-to-be-discontinued Camaro, as well as a flat-bottom steering wheel. Red leather upholstery is optional, combining with the other styling elements to create a more fun feel than the plainer cabins of the Mach-E and EV6. The Blazer EV doesn’t entirely dispel the stereotype of cheap GM interiors (some parts, like the turn-signal and shifter stalks, felt flimsy), but the interior is at least mostly free of the piano-black plastic that’s inexplicably in vogue at other car brands.

In Canada, Chevy is currently offering a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain in the LT and RS trim levels, with other variants to be added later.
RWD models have 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, and get a 102-kilowatt-hour battery pack. AWD models have 288 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque, and come with an 85-kWh pack. It’s unusual to see a dual-motor powertrain with a lower output than the single-motor option, but here it’s positioned as the base offering. AWD is mandatory on the lower LT trim level, and it’s the same price as RWD on the RS.
Also unusual is Chevy’s decision to offer a single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD) powertrain option alongside the RWD and AWD powertrains. Available from the 2025 model year on the Blazer EV LT, this will be the cheapest and, Chevy anticipates, highest-volume configuration. Full specs will be available closer to launch. A Blazer EV SS performance model will complete the lineup, boasting a dual-motor AWD powertrain making 557 hp and 648 lb-ft of torque, as well as a Wide Open Watts (WOW) launch mode that will get it from zero to 96 km/h in fewer than four seconds, Chevy claims.
Our drive time was limited to RWD and AWD versions of the Blazer EV RS. Both boasted strong acceleration, albeit leaving plenty of headroom for the Blazer EV SS. And while it is substantially more powerful, we felt the RWD model was a bit traction-limited. The AWD Blazer seemed to pull harder off the line.
The Blazer EV shares basic dimensions with the Cadillac Lyriq, but the two GM electric SUVs couldn’t drive more differently. Where the Lyriq provides a classic luxury-car experience, the Blazer EV embodies the classic trade-off between ride and handling. It proved remarkably capable on twisty roads—with impressively precise steering—but at the expensive of comfort. The stiff suspension made smooth California roads feel like the winter-ravaged Michigan pavement where the Blazer EV was developed. Cabin noise was fairly low, at least, with only a hint of wind noise at highway speeds.
We also appreciated the steering-wheel paddle that controls the level of regenerative braking. First seen on the Chevy Bolt EV, it lets the drive toggle from minimal regen through to one-pedal driving. And you can pull the paddle to help decelerate for corners, a bit like downshifting in a manual-transmission gasoline car. Being able to adjust regen on the fly to suit different driving styles and conditions is important. But this also adds a bit of driver involvement.

The Blazer EV may look more like a traditional SUV than its closest rivals, but in this case, looks really are only skin deep.
The interior feels fairly spacious, but the numbers show that headroom and legroom in both rows are pretty close to those of the sleeker Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6. Nor does the Blazer EV offer the commanding driving position of a traditional SUV. We didn’t have any issues with outward visibility, but the high side sills and deep dashboard (it’s big enough to serve as a table for meals at the local drive-in) make for a feeling similar to wearing a trench coat with a high, turned-up collar.
At 722 litres with the second row in place and 1,673 litres with those seats folded, the Blazer EV has less cargo space than a gasoline Blazer—not exactly the best advertisement for the packaging advantages of electric powertrains. It does have more cargo space than an EV6, though, and an available “presence activated” liftgate that will automatically open when the key fob is nearby. The Ford Mustang Mach-E offers small advantages at 841 litres with its rear seats in place and 1,690 litres with its rear seats folded. It also has a frunk—something the Blazer EV lacks.
Up front, the Blazer EV’s heavily stylized interior still leaves room for expected small-item storage, including a large and secure place to park a phone and a decent-sized centre console storage bin and door pockets. However, some climate controls as well as buttons for the headlights have been moved to the touchscreen, which requires a bit of adjustment.

The Blazer EV debuts a new Google-based infotainment system that will be used in all future Chevy EVs. Like systems from Volvo and Polestar, this has built-in Google apps, such as Google Maps for navigation and Google Assistant for voice recognition. But Chevy also eliminated standalone Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, providing deeper functionality for Android users but leaving iOS users with only basic Bluetooth.
In place of a very popular smartphone connectivity feature, Chevy gives you big screens and, the automaker argues, greater capability. A 17.7-inch touchscreen and 11-inch digital instrument cluster are standard. Both sport some of the sharpest graphics around. The infotainment system also features built-in route planning that automatically finds charging stations and pre-conditions the battery pack on the way. And while Chevy isn’t the first brand to offer over-the-air (OTA) software updates, it promises frequent updates that will add new features rather than just fixing problems.
The out-of-the-box user experience is mostly good. User experience designers made good use of the screen space available with layouts that keep most of needed information and functions close to the surface. However, the touchscreen is angled toward the driver in a way that front-seat passengers might find inconvenient, while still making for an awkward reach from the driver’s seat. Headlight controls and other vehicle functions are also touchscreen-based, and while they’re placed close to the driver, physical switches would be better.
The Blazer EV is also notable as the first Chevy with a completely hands-free start sequence. As long as the key fob is in the vehicle, all you need to do is press the brake pedal to start driving. It’s something Tesla and Polestar drivers are used to, but it marks something of a philosophical shift for Chevy. Instead of trying to carry over as much of the gasoline-car driving experience as possible, as with the Bolt EV, Chevy is going for a more high-tech feel here.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were not available at the time of publication. That’s not unusual for new vehicles like the Blazer EV.
The Blazer EV gets standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, a following-distance indicator, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams, and reverse automatic braking and park assist. The Super Cruise hands-free driver assist system already available on numerous other GM models is standard on SS and optional on RS. Super Cruise can maintain speed and following distance while keeping the vehicle centred in its lane, relying on detailed maps and a driver-monitoring system for safety.

With the smaller 85-kWh battery pack available in AWD models, the Blazer EV gets a Natural Resources Canada-rated 449 kilometres of range. Chevy estimates that the larger 102-kWh pack in RWD models will deliver up to 521 kilometres of range. Models with the smaller pack can DC fast charge at up to 150 kilowatts, recovering 111 kilometres of range in 10 minutes. The larger pack gets a higher power rate of 190 kW, allowing it to recover 125 kilometres in 10 minutes. The Blazer EV also has an 11-kW AC onboard charger, but Chevy didn’t provide a charge-time estimate.
While Chevy has a plethora of configurations planned, only three were available to order at the time of publication. Right now the cheapest Blazer EV is the AWD LT, which starts at $63,330 with the mandatory $2,500 destination charge. The RS is available with either AWD or RWD, both offered in Canada at the same price of $73,330. That overlaps with the Blazer EV’s more luxurious Cadillac Lyriq cousin, although the latter doesn’t qualify for federal or provincial rebates while the Blazer EV does, meaning you can recover $5,000 to $12,500 from the listed price on the Blazer EV depending on where you live in Canada. Expect the planned LT FWD model to be cheaper, with the SS performance model commanding an even higher price.
Warranty coverage includes an eight-year/160,000-kilometre battery warranty and the same three-year/60,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper limited warranty offered on other Chevy models. That’s comparable to other electric SUVs. Since it qualifies for Canada’s EV incentive programs, the Blazer EV is cost-competitive with rivals.
