While most other cars are becoming larger and more disconnected from the road, the Toyota GR86 gives enthusiasts the tactile performance they crave.

The 2023 Toyota GR86 is a love letter to performance enthusiasts everywhere. As the majority of the industry moves towards less connection to the road, the GR86 remains firmly planted, with just the right amount of technology to keep you informed, but not so much that it detracts from the driving experience.

As many automakers (including Toyota) look toward electrification and automation to change the way that people get around, sporty coupes like the GR86 are going to become increasingly rare. In fact, the ever-risk-averse Toyota shared responsibility for this car with Subaru, which sells the same car as the BRZ.

Verdict: The 2023 Toyota GR86 delivers delightful performance in a stylish and inexpensive package. For shoppers looking for a fun car (and who don't need to cart around many passengers), it's a great option in an ever-shrinking sports-car market.

8/10

The GR86 was redesigned for the 2022 model year, which coincided with a name change from Toyota 86 to GR86. For the 2023 model year, Toyota has introduced a 10th Anniversary Special Edition. Otherwise, the GR86 hardly changes from its 2022 redesign. It features angular, menacing headlights and a large grille. Were this 10 years ago, this would be a bold head-turning design, but in 2023, even the common family sedan has louder styling like this. And if you’re trying to maintain a low profile while carving up back roads, this is perfectly fine.

The rear wheels are pushed to the extreme rear corners, as they should be on any good rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car. The rear window falls back into a lovely teardrop design, and our test model featured a “duckbill” rear spoiler. This spoiler brought some visual balance to the GR86, but at the expense of its low profile.

Inside, the GR86 is the epitome of no-nonsense with straight lines, simple instruments, and a driver-focused aesthetic. The list of trim levels is just as simple, including just Base and Premium models as well as the 10th Anniversary Special Edition. Standard features on the Base trim include manually adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Ultrasuede upholstery accents, cloth seating, push-button start, power doors and windows, a digital speedometer, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. It also comes with two USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels.

Moving up to the Premium trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 all-season performance tires. It also adds that duckbill rear spoiler, adaptive front headlights, and larger brakes. It also adds aluminum sport pedals, a leather gearshift boot with red or silver contrast stitching, and a leather parking brake boot with either red or silver contrast stitching. The Premium trim comes with heated sport bucket seats with side bolsters… but they are still manually adjustable. The premium trim swaps out cloth upholstery for a combination of leather and Ultrasuede.

The 10th Anniversary Special Edition features forged matte 18-inch alloy wheels, black paint for the C-pillar and duckbill rear spoiler, a Gazoo Racing cat-back performance exhaust system with chrome tips, and exclusive Solar Shift (orange) paint scheme. Inside, the 10th Anniversary Special Edition features orange stitching on the shift boot and parking-brake cover. It also features black and orange trim on the heated sport bucket seats.

We spent a week testing a GR86 in Premium trim. Those bucket seats were supportive through hard cornering but also comfortable enough for long drives. In fact, we were surprised by just how comfortable the GR86 was over a multiple-hour test drive on the highway and back roads. Despite its handling prowess, it does not punish you, and we have to think the upgraded seats are part of that. The duckbill spoiler on the GR86 Premium really completes the curb appeal of the GR86. Without that spoiler, the rear end feels a bit elongated. No matter which trim you select, the front-end design is straightforward. It makes for a strong presence but one that is never overstated. The GR86 is the type of vehicle that lets its performance do the talking.

It is all about handling. Not big, comfy, or quiet, it is nimble and so much fun to drive. Most like the Mazda Miata without the rag top.May 21, 2024

This is the most fun Ive had in a car since I drove the first gen Boxster. I feel like Im driving something much more expensive... only its better because unlike modern expensive sport/luxury cars this one doesnt isolate you from the driving experience. What you do in the car has a direct and immediate impact on whats happening on the road without the sensation that theres a computer in-between correcting your every input. The suspension and steering give plenty of feedback as to whats happening with the tires grip. The rear tires gradually loose traction under power in a turn as long as youre not too heavy footed and once you do loose grip its easy to get it back because the front looses traction way after the back of the car. The base models Primacy tires have very poor grip in the rear under power, especially on wet roads. Its also impossible to accelerate in first and even second, even in a straight line, without loosing traction at the rear. This forces me to be gently on throttle application when the roads are wet. The manual transmission is a joy to use. The shifter has short and precise throws and you can feel the clutch engage in the pedal travel. I would like the engagement to be more in the middle of the pedal travel instead of almost all of the way out... but Im getting used to it. Road noise is a bit loud... but not as bad as my 2017 Civic Sport. The car is stable at speed and under heavy braking. While the structure of the car is very stiff, the suspension is comfortable and communicative; you can feel the road surfaces as you sit in the car through the steering wheel and in your seat. The steering is quick an precise. Body roll is very minimal. The car is low to the ground and you sit very low in it. On to the interior. I love it. You can do almost everything without having to interact with a touch screen. There are large and easy to use buttons and dials for all the standard controls; though the shifter is in the way of accessing them easily. The buttons on the steering wheel also work great and help keep your eyes on the road. The only thing lacking is a place to put my sunglasses... or pretty much anything else. There are usable cup holders in the doors and theres a clamshell opening to a set of cup holders in between the seats starting where the drivers rear elbow sits. This has to remain closed if you want to use it as an arm rest (which it works perfectly for). Instead of having cup holders here, because theyre too far back to access while driving anyway) I wish this opening were just a rectangular storage space. This is where you have to put your phone after you plug it in to connect to the car (because theres nowhere else to put it), but theres not room for both a phone and sunglasses with the cup holder shape in there. The rear seats are completely unusable for people. Anyone who tells you differently is deluding themselves. This is a two seat sports car with a rear seat storage area... About the engine and power: This engine is a joy to use. You have access to all of the torque by the time you get to 3000rpm and as long as you are above 2000 there is enough power to accelerate. The redline is also all the way at 7500rpm... so theres a large usable power range. On tight twisty roads I can pretty much leave the car in 4th gear... except the shifter is so much fun to use that I cant resist using it: downshift into 3rd as you approach a corner, then accelerate through the corner in 3rd while flirting with the limit of the rear grip and getting some oversteer, and then skip 4th and go straight to 5th and slow the hell back down because now youre going way to fast... honestly this car has more than enough power for its size and the amount of grip available. Which is exactly how I feel about my 2017 civic, which makes 180 hp to the front wheels... more power just isnt useful if you cant apply it to the ground without the wheels spinning. I test drove a BRZ before I bought the GR86. The two cars are very similar of course, since theyre almost identical mechanically. I could definitely feel the difference in the suspension: The BRZ was very comfortable and compliant. It felt like a luxury sports car. I could go over railroad tracks and bumps and rough pavement and not be bothered by it at all. Similar road surfaces in the GR are not as comfortable and you feel the bumps to a greater extent. I was going to buy the BRZ because you can order one the way you want it from the dealership and just wait for your car to show up 6 months later without a ridiculous dealer markup... Ultimately I bought the GR instead of the BRZ because it feels a little more exciting to drive and I lucked out and got a good deal on a used one with low miles. If I hadnt gotten lucky I would have happily waited for the BRZ. Feb 22, 2024
