Appearance: It's a car built to target Asian girls, and
the styling reflects that. It's curvy, yet still has a
few sharp angles. Looking forward to the update
due in Australia in May.
Build Quality: It's a Mazda... what more do I need
to say? No squeaks or rattles from the bodywork
(only from my CD cases in the door pockets...)
Improvements I would like to see: more progressive
clutch uptake (currently very abrupt), and a more
progressive handbrake (doesn't hold at all unless
fully on).
Performance: I haven't yet had the opportunity to
get it out onto a track, but occasionally on a dry,
sunny day, I'll have a bit of fun. It takes a fair bit of
abuse to prompt any interference from the stability
or traction control. It accelerates beautifully for a
1.5L, due to having such a light chassis and body.
It brakes pretty well, too, considering how light it
is. Anti-lock brakes with emergency Brake Assist
and Brake-Force Distribution help to pull it up
quickly. Remember, though, this is a city car, not a
sports car, and as such the suspension is set up for
comfort. Chuck it into a corner, and there's a fair
bit of body roll, but despite this, will stay on-
course. Out on the freeway, however, it will cruise
comfortably all day long, which was why I chose the
Mazda2 over the VW Polo or Hyundai Getz.
Torque-steer can be a issue if hooning away from
the lights, but generally can be held pretty well.
Power-to-weight ratio works in its favour in traffic,
as it's easy to dart between lanes, and get up to
speed.
Cost of ownership (AUS $): Maintenance costs are a
little higher than older cars, which is only because it
has to be serviced by a Mazda service centre in
order to get the computer software updates. I
generally have mine serviced out of the city, where
my parents live, and the service prices are
significantly lower (up to 30% lower). On the fuel
side of things, my calculations show an average of
6.4L/100km (sorry, don't know the conversion to
MPG)
Fun Factor: Love it. I live in the city, which is
exactly the place it's designed for. I also spend a
lot of time travelling long-distance on motorways,
and I couldn't ask for a more comfortable car in the
compact class. It's got plenty of sprightliness,
which is great for having a giggle outside of peak
traffic. Love it.Mar 07, 2010

potenza xciò fare retromarcia in salita è
difficilissimo....Mar 04, 2010

-electric steering one of the best i've come across;
nice weighting, surprisingly lots of feedback. I think
Mazda has cracked the electric steering racks, as
their RX-8 and Mazda 3,6 has one of the best
steering systems already.
-Automatic gearbox is good, but I wish it had a
taller top gear or even a 5th, cuz on the motorway
its doing 3000rpm at 100km/h, and the economy
does suffer.
-Launch is good, and there's no slip whatsoever.
You get instant acceleration when u press the
accelerator.
-suspension could do better with a bit more
compliance. Its firm, but has a very 'rubbery' feeling
-interior space is excellent, and build quality is
good, but the plastics is a bit crude. But hey, its a
NZD24000 car :)

Performance: acceleration is great for a 1.3 litre, the car having great power to weight ratio. top speed is sufficient for some great fun (180km/h)... Braking is expceptional... but the best thing about it is it's HANDLING. Oversteer is a doodle to control and adds a large smile on your face :))))
Build quality = 95% Nothing went wrong after 9000km in just 6 months.
Appearance: Exterior is superb (100%)... Interior.. could be a bit more funky, but overall it's a 95%
Cost of Ownership: Excellent, really good bang for your buck.... Don't push it too much though..
FUN FACTOR???? 100% fun!!! IT IS BRILLIANT!! enough said. Dec 20, 2008

Unfortunately, the stupid Yanks that created this one haven't gotten the fact that there are more editions out there. The one I own is the 2003 model.
Anyway, the first you notice is the boxy image of it. It doesn't have the usual safeness as in a Jazz or the reliability of a Yaris/Echo. But it does have that rev-happy nature of it, especially when you put your foot down and hear it roar when it gets above 3500rpm.
But there are some downsides. A lot of Tic-tac plastics, the image of it and the tyres are a lot to be desired. Definitely replace the front tyres with some sports tyres and you'll have a damn nice car.Aug 25, 2008
