2005 BMW X5 Test Drive Review summaryImage

Now half a decade old, the 2005 BMW X5 continues to set standards for what a performance-oriented luxury SUV can be.

A midsize five-passenger SUV, the 2005 BMW X5 comes in 3.0i, 4.4i, and 4.8is model series, each equipped with a different engine. After a significant freshening for 2004, the 2005 X5 gets just a few changes. Automatic climate control is standard this year, and new wood trim selections are available. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the Acura MDX, the Cadillac SRX, the Porsche Cayenne, the Lexus RX 330, and others.
8/10

Though the BMW X5 has been on North American roads for years, it can still cause a double-take as you reconcile traditional design cues like the kidney grilles, round headlights, L-shaped taillights, and classic Hofmeister kink with the SUV to which they're applied. Last year’s design updates certainly upgraded the appearance, and the new X5 4.8is looks terrific with its 20-inch wheels and sporty design cues.

BMW takes a traditional no-nonsense approach to the X5’s interior. A layered dashboard presents crystal-clear instrumentation, and high-quality materials are the rule. Controls on the steering wheel, as well as dashboard buttons and knobs, provide access to all functions and features.

Overall I love my BMW x5, but it could have a smoother ride. The actual performance and durability is awesome! Id definitely purchase another.Sep 02, 2020

Even though it's an 05 the stance and styling still looks good. Interior wise it's comfortable and is optioned well. Radio is dated. The 4.8 has good power and still gets 22mpgs on highway which isn't bad for a AWD luxury tank.Mar 13, 2015

I leased a brand new 2010 Mercedes ML350 before this X5. The E53 (X5) as is the technical term- outpowers its German counterpart. The ML didn't feel tough and infact it was like a puffy and sluggish sedan for soccer moms in the OC. The 4.4i Sport package handling is excellent on the freeway, curves, and going up hill. The set back is it is very bouncy going over speed bumps and potholes. It's not the best daily driver, but then again this is a second car. It's an excellent value as a used car because for the price I bought it, you can't easily find a car that's got what this has. Brand new this car cost close to $62k after options and taxes. I paid $8k. That's alot of car for the price. By comparison the 2007-2012 X5 became too tame and lost their urban attitude in favor of a very rounded SUV that look more like a wagon.Feb 07, 2015
