This car is a beast. Toss snow tires on it, and winters in Upstate NY seemed like nothing. Toss nice summer tires on it, and youll have a blast. The only downside is the body roll with the stock suspension system, that is only noticed if you are really pushing the car. I mean taking on ramps at 65 mph or higher. If your good with the clutch and get a feel for it, just skip forth gear. It has the power, and with a good shift, youll be fine. The little bit of power loss vastly outweighs the extra shift time. If doing mods, highly highly suggest a light weight flywheel and a stage 2 clutch. Keep an eye on the engine and the transmission mounts if you start upgrading!Jul 02, 2020

I've only owned VW's all my life. 04 Gti was my very first car when I got my license it was automatic tho. 10 yrs later I had an opportunity to get one in a 5 speed also in mint condition for a GREAT deal; deal was so good I bought it just to re-flip it. Well 6 months and 5k miles later I was offered double what I paid for it and I refu the offer. This is just a Super fun, never let you down vehicle.Feb 05, 2015

I got it tuned to APR Stage I and gave it a cold air intake. Performance
wise, I would say this car is average or a little above average with ECU
tuned. The little turbo makes it a little exciting to drive, turbo sounds
awesome with the cold air intake. Driving the car feels quick, but
actually not that quick. Handling wise, this car has tremendous body
roll and a little understeering. In my opinion, a rear sway bar is a must
for this car. This car is old, so the interior is kinda worn out. Trims and
surfaces feels cheap, interior always make noises, I won't say it's a
pleasant atmosphere inside the car. I bought this car to save gas, and
it's giving me pretty good mpg with 25 really bad city in miami and 30
highway. Overall, an okay car for me. I am happy about the mpg, and
the turbo make it fun to drive when you need some power. Best of all,
it's cheap and easy to mod and maintain.Jan 27, 2013

This is the nicest car I've owned and I have owned plenty of American as well as foreign cars. It's nice to have every amenity possible including a cold weather package that included heated leather seat, heated mirrors, and head washer nozzles. The tilting & telescopic steering along with the fully adjustable seats make this car fit like a glove. The premium stereo is up there with high-end luxury models as well as the overall performance. The 200 h.p. VR6 runs perfect and with the paired smooth shifting 6-speed transmission, the drive is anything but dull. Congrats to making an affordable autobahn bred sports car obtainable by the working class. Nov 05, 2011

Preformance, this car is just a monster considering it is a 4 cylinder engine.. Mostly due to the turbo's work but still.. It's economic, fast and will whip just about anything you can see.
Build quality, German. that's all i have to say.
Appearance, German Quality, sharp appearance.
Upkeep, economic gas mileage.

5 Speed A/T Sucks! Dealer refuse A/T Fluid replacement because said not needed on MK4 then Valve Body went wrong at 110,000 miles. VW A/T Fluid freak'n expensive!
So many things often go bad even do proper routine maintenance.

I have only had this car (legally) on the road for a very short time (2 weeks) but it
has been the love of my life! A 6 speed VR6 is the most fun to drive. Lots of

fun to drive with as a manual transmission, but slow to pick
up speed, and noisy for highway traveling. Loads of under
steer, and unnecessarily expensive to insure.
The build quality is excellent however, and it sounds
sweeet with a subwoffer installed. no sheet metal rattles

Awesomeness. One word to describe this amazing drive. From the solid, down to
earth steering... To the twitchy, tight suspension. From the growl of the turboback
exhaust, to the whistle of the forge diverter valve. No Honda can compare to the
fun level. No Toyota can compare to the reliability. No import can match the build

Performance - For the price, this car is hard to best... lots of power.
Build Quality - the interior is excellent, the seats are firm and fit like a glove.
Apperance - Not the best looking car on the road, but it gets the job done.
Cost of Ownership - Average gas mileage, and fairly reliable.

I love my GTI, its fast sporty and gets pretty decent mileage. I would buy another one in a second, just not from a dealer, cause the stealership, is just that....VW dealers are crooks. I actually would like the new w12 gti with 650BHP, is that sick or what?Aug 15, 2008

This car has been great for me. I have heard that VW have issues, I have found none with this car. Good on gas (although I use premium), quick and fun to drive. Drove it to California and back with no issues. Highly recomended. Good Good Good Good Good GoodJul 18, 2008

Great performance and fuel economy at a great price. Surprisingly well mannered in all conditions including snow. Drives well in the Alaskan snow and bitter cold. Has never left me stranded and nearly zero maintenance costs over the last four years. Recommend VW's to anyone.May 06, 2008

The VW GTI 1.8T is the turbo (non-diesel) model of the VW Golf, and the turbo does a lot for
it. Not only does it make this car have a lot of pick up and great acceleration for such a small
little thing, but the sound of that turbo winding up when you accelerating is exhilarating. By
