Very quick for only having a 174 HP. HP and Torque curves are flat so its always
pulling 6.5 to 60 with 174 weighing 3100 with me in it is not to bad. German brakes
nough said. Handles like a go-kart. Only thing Ive replaced is a wheel bearing. Very
awesome looking even stock turns heads. Depends on how you drive it but i get
22-25 mpg. So much fun to drive everyday with the 5 spd and the VR6 just sounds

The 2001 GTI VR6 GLX model has all the bells and whistles. Digital climate control, heated seats & mirrors, power moon roof, and comfortable racing inspired leather seats. The acceleration is above average with enough power to smoke the tires shifting into 2nd, sometimes 3rd gear, hammer down. The braking and handling are what you'd expect in a ralley type sports car making it super fun to drive. Classic style and well designed interior cabin, road noise is a con. Volkswagens are built solidly and I have not had any flawed electrical problems as reported with many VWs. No rattles, no rust, no lame parts. Fuel economy is just ok, 16/24, especially when driven aggressively for fun. Replaced the clutch & timing chain at 120k, other maintenance average $1000 a year for brakes, belts, tires, alternator at 75k, cooling system sensors, ABS wiring harness, battery terminal harness did rust & snap. Overall a great car, reliable, good in bad weather, and fun to drive. Nov 12, 2012

Love the mk4 styling. Bought this for the VR6 specifically; fantastic sounding and performing motor. Great interior build quality, with plenty of room for driver and all passengers. The GLX trim comes with nearly every single option available so that's always a plus.Mar 19, 2012

good performance, Very fast in 2nd gear, good braking as the warning light comes on..
quality german built, spare parts are reasonably priced.
a bit heavy on petrol around town but i get 38-41 on long trips.

very quick fun to drive car...any vw is...pretty good acceleration once the turbo starts spooling great gas mileage, the only problem is that i scrape over pretty much any bump, i guess thats the cost of driving a slammed car...should be an r32 and have all wheel drive...Aug 13, 2010

Performance - Decent for an affordable car.
Build Quality - Every stock bushing=Garbage
Appearance - Silver exterior, shaved, debadged, slammed. Black leather interior
Cost of Ownership - Gas mileage sucks, especially when your cat is gone. Repairs
are few and far between, but expensive.

Great performance potential. Lots of tuning help and upgrades available. Smokes Lexus IS250's, and Benz SLK230 Kompressors when the GTI is chipped. Very cheap to own, expensive to maintain, fun to drive. When it works, that is. Constantly needs repair work. Handles kinda sloppy with stock suspension.Oct 21, 2009

for the 2001 model it comes with 150hp/150tq its was pretty good before i modded it but.... it was still slow to me but after modding the car its very fun to drive, fast, and attacks the corner with no problem at all. and its a nice sleeper car some people underestimate this car and what it can do with some mods done to it and i can have a friend vouch also cause he drive a '05 MK4 GTI and I saw a race with him vs a Audi S4 stock and he won that raceSep 12, 2009

Albeit random electrical issues, this car has gobs of torque, it's SOLID and at 120k miles still behaves as friskily as the day we brought her home. Extremely versatile and roomy, and a breeze to drive in traffic or at 150mph :DMay 02, 2009

Great acceleration, at 7 years old, car is starting to disintegrate. Electric window mechanism is poorly designed - I have had to replace 2 since owning the car. Hoping that the Golf 6 is released in SA sometime soon, but I am interested in a hydrogen car as my next vehicle, so might not take that plunge.Sep 28, 2008

vr6 engine gives great acceleration in any circumstance. factory sport suspension wins everytime in a mountainous slalom type course. no creaks or rattles. everything sounds as stable as a new vehicle except its 7 yrs old. the exterior looks great with its light gold paint job, black background headlights and blacked out side markers and side turn signals. factory 5 spoke 17" rims and a great sounding borla catback exhaust. upgraded neuspeed ignition wires, sirius satellite radio, jvc head unit, polk audio speakers, eclipse 4 channel amp, kicker 750.1 powering a kicker 12" L7. Brought this after the head gasket went on the Mk2. Was getting older so things like working windows, and AC were important . . . This was the 1.8T, great torque, good power and reasonable MPG! A solid engine. Got rid of it due to strange turbo lag when cold somedaysJan 05, 2008

I have never owned a car I have loved as much as my '01 GTI. Even the fully stock car has enough power for everyday drivers. It is sporty and sophisticated and feels comfortable. For all you speed demons, this car is highly modifiable, I am about ready to push about 285 hp out of mine for less than $500 (thank you ebay!) and that is pre-chip.
