it was great. quick and great handling. comfortable, and deffinitely good to take a date out in. probably not a good car for an inexperienced driver though. the amount of power it had for how little it weighs was a crazy combination. I race cars at autocross and track events, and i still lost control. Of course that could be more me then the car since im an overconfident 17 year old.Nov 04, 2012

Once you drive a VW with the VR6 you will fall in love, the car has a sound like no other and drives like a sports car around corners, the GTI is the best one to test drive to get the full feeling. Oct 04, 2012

Its a great car, sporty with a good amount of power when needed. Good looking car from all prospective and is part of the GTI legacy. With out a doubt the funest car i've had and was completely worth the buy.Aug 02, 2010

My current car, the turbo gives it a nice boost and always puts a smile on my face. In my opinion a good model shape and colour. Recaro seats are a nice touch and if you're going to splash out on a Golf it has to be a GTI!Jun 29, 2010

Over all its not too bad. The 2.0 engine can be a bit lack luster but with the manual transmission it makes it fun enough to cat around in. You must avoid the automatic at all costs. The interior is rather nice and solidly built, however seats can be squeaky sometimes and you will get rattles every once in a while. The transmission is not the best I have ever shifted, for instance going into 1st from a dead stop from neutral can be pain. Usually I have to hit 2nd and then go into 1st to get it to engage. The steering feel isn't horrible but its not great either. My car suspension is very modified, lowered, firmer bushings, 17 wheels, track rubber, sway bars, adjustable shocks. The car stil has a vauge feeling on center and still under steers like plow. Its better than it was stock but its still no track car. Over all I give it a 6.5 out of 10Feb 18, 2010

This care is amazing. VR6 for the win. There is no replacement for displacement. And the sound of this care is unmatched by any other. This is an amazing car to drive, as long as you don't get an automatic.Jul 31, 2009

The VR6 engine is sweet sounding and provides a gang of torque at low RPM's. Although it's a small car there is a ample room for packing stuff in. I enjoy driving the car everyday, the seats are comfortable and the ride isn't to harsh. The GTI is available in too different models VR6 or 1.8T, both are very good engines. Jun 04, 2009

Handles great, especially in bad weather, though not as nimble as previous GTIs due to additional weight. Mileage is decent even when driven enthusiasically(20mpg city average for mine). Design is clean, functional and understated. Only gripe on the interior is the placement of pullout cupholders above the radio. Still use the stock Monsoon system in mine and it still sounds great. Love it. Amazingly quick with the mods I have done to it... very sleeper-ish, nobody expects a little old VW to blow their doors off.
I love it when people try.
Well built with true German Engineering before they moved most of the manufacturing to Mexico. Its been an excellent car to me and made me a true VW enthusiast.Nov 11, 2008

Top end performance is good,but on quarter mile it is surprisingly sluggish although it is turbo-charged. Build quality is good and it sits on the road like glue. It has black leather interior which is in immaculate condition. The white coloured exterior is in very good condition with no modifications done. Car is more than fun to drive. Sep 09, 2008

Bought this car new in 2000, due to the styling and
quickness. Within the first year, I had to return to the
dealer 4 times for window regulators that failed,
sending the window into the door, never to roll-up
again. Very fun car to drive, lots of bells and whistles,

I bought the car knowing it was pretty quick and upgrades can be easily done to it. Luxury was also important to me, so the heated seats and leather package was the selling point. it Currently has 175,000 KM's with no issues. With it's quiet, comfortable ride and small form factor. makes it great for driving around the city. With the rear seats folded down, it's great for camping trips or carrying tons of gear! This is a powerful little beast with a 2.8L VR6 and 5 speed manual. Of course traction control and abs make for safe driving even under the pressure that I put it through. Extremely fun to drive yet reliable at the same time. This is a car that you could take to the track and drive hard, then drive it right back home. Nice interior and racing style leather bucket seats make for driver stability around hard corners. Overall I love it and you can't get me away from it.Apr 09, 2008

The exterior of the car gives it a fat sleek look compared to the previous generation. The color of the car is called tropic orange, which is hard to say that most orange cars look good, but it looks great on the GTI, a color that you do not see at all in Ohio. Interior styling is a bit like its cousin the Audi, Volkswagen made the GTI into a sports car with nice luxurious features, such as automatic climate control (Climatronic), heated front leather seats. The wood trim fits well with the car, its not "goddy" at all. Sun roof is great on hot days. The 12v VR6 moves the car without any lag, the five speed manual transmission works effortlessly, Overall great car.Apr 05, 2008

I took one out and could tell it was having some engine trouble. If you find one in good condition I wouldn't tell you to buy it... then again I would be hard pressed to tell you not to buy it. It's good around town and is still fun enough to keep you from getting bored (if you're that sort of person). It's also pretty comfortable for a sporty hatchback.
BUT if you really want to get a Golf or Golf GTI I would really suggest picking another year than 2000-2006. Of course you COULD just pick one without the 1.8 liter turbo engine- but that wouldn't be any fun.Feb 25, 2008

My one had been fully modified by Oettinger in Germany so it was souped up to 230bhp, 19 inch alloys.. bodykit, full leather recaro interior.. such a sweet machine.. miss it so much... Brilliant, fun car to drive.. Dec 27, 2007
