2000 Nissan Maxima Reviews, Pricing & Specs

I did like the stock Bose speakers. I put in an aftermarket radio so I could hook my iPod up (use the non-Bose harness though). I liked the tailights and the way it handled, minus the bad strut mounts and rear coils. It was fun to feel the engine roar with the pedal down. Sunroof was a plus. It really bothered me not having heated leather (live in MN and most winter days were under 15 this year so seats were frozen). Overall, if someone has taken good care of their Maxima, it will do you well. Be prepared to replace those front mounts and rear coils though. They seem to be a common flaw in most Maximas/Altimas from 2000-2009 or so. Very dependable car with few repairs. I was just bothered by all the little things that added up. 14 year old cars do tend to have flaws though!Apr 17, 2014

In general it is a good car to have 1. Mechanically reliable, good engine, good transmission, recently changed tires, never gave me a problem on highway. 2. V6 engine is fast to accelerate on a short highway ramp. 3. leather interior, not have to worry about spill. 4. Sun roof, nice to drive around in summers. 5. heated seat and power seat, very convenient to use. 6. Bose stereo, necessary for musics and radios on a long-distance travel. 7. large enough size, give you more safety and more space inside.Mar 11, 2014

We bought our Maxima in 2002 with 34k on it. Very sporty handling and acceleration. At 75k, SVC Engine light started coming on. Traced to faulty firing cells, car would run but miss and stumble. Nissan acknowledged this problem, but would not recall car. $80 apiece times six to replace+labor. This car DOES NOT like Ethanol fuel. I have to run a tank of non-ethanol every 3rd fillup to keep O2 sensors happy. Replaced sensor behind cat. converter as ethanol fuel creates an overrich condition on rear 02 sensor. Mileage is between 26-29 depending of fuel used. Also has odd sized tires, most stores don't stock them. I'm 6'2" and getting in and out is not the easiest. Car does not have a fuel filter, if it plugs up, the fuel pump assembly has to be replaced Mar 07, 2011

i got this car after driving a 91 deville for 3 years. it was definately an upgrade.....gas mileage and handling wise.....its not as "roomy" as i like, i love the bose sound system and the sunroof haha, as well as the leather and the heated seats, but to make this car complete i had to get the windows tinted and put an aftermarket head unit in and put some subs in the trunk you know haha.Apr 05, 2010

wouldnt trade my maxima for anything!! performance is awesome build is excellent appearance is very sleek and nice gas a little pricey only sunoco premium fun - what isnt fun on this car:)sunroof , bose speakers toys , nice wheels handling is very good for a sedan, stiff tight turns! car is all around wow!! it is a good family vehicle my maxima has gone on a few camping trips up north trunk space is great ...Feb 17, 2010

the 2000 maxima is an great improvement on the previous generation. in 2000 they bumped up the power 32 hp that you can feel. this car has 226k and still running strong other then regular maintenance no real problems. this is the type of car where if you wanna cruse down the highway you will be fine but when you see someone coming up on you in your review you can easily put your foot on the peddle and let the car loose with out hesitation Aug 03, 2009

Was OK. I got bored of it very quickly. I had it only about 9 months I think. Crazy fast. Was a 5spd manual. This thing beat crazy cars. Towards the end though it stalled on me a few times when I put the clutch in. Also I had it parked for a few days and when I started it the engine made a huge crash knocking kinda noise, I had it towed to the dealer. They said there was nothing wrong and it never happened again. Was very modern for the time. It was redesigned for 2000 and I bought it in Dec of '99. The dash/interior was very sleek. Very nice. The back lights were hideous. I wish I would've bought the SE. The SE is a nice looking car, this one looked kinda on the cheap side. It was pearl white though which I did like alot. Although when it was keyed it was like a thousand or 2 I don't remember because of the color, theres like a few layers and its a complicated paint job. Probably would never match exactly too they said. (Hmmm now to think of it pearl white cars aren't around as often as they used to be maybe thats why poss could never look perfect if needed any repair but I don't know ???). I don't know why I didn't really like it because it was pretty nice. The back lights did annoy me alot. I already said that, see how much I didn't like them. I added the spoiler and rainguards as you can see. Oh also the leather and sunroof was dealer installed. I got an amazing deal on this thing though. I paid only like 20K with the leather and sunroof. You ever see those ad's that the dealers advertise ridiculously cheap prices? Well the ad said something like $17K. I went in and said I want the car in the ad. Of course they tried talking me into something else but I was persistant on buying that one. They kept saying you know its a 5spd right? I kept saying yes thats what I want. I wanted leather and a sunroof. Again talking me into other cars telling me I can't get it in this model. Hmmmm I know it can be dealer installed. They didn't like the idea I knew that was a possible option. So yeah through persistance I got a nicely loaded Maxima crazy cheap. OOOhhh yeah I traded the ES300 in for this car. When I went to drop the title off a day or 2 after the manager said I ripped him off. I asked how? He said he accidentally priced my car as a GS300. Oops. Not my problem I already have my car. But yeah I didn't have it long, I just didn't care for it.Jul 20, 2009

Considering it was the newly redisinged, got a faceleift, it was amazing. Bigger, more spacious, more power, it seemed like a great buy. Like any new car, the car was great as any new car would be, but this generation was notorious for not testing the engine estensively to find the kinks you normally would expect a manufacturer to find. Notorious for having bad maf sensors, and owners found out the hard way. Everything else about the car, is strong, solid. Reliable engine, and good transmission. I average 24 mpg, with a 3.0 v6. That's awsome, and it's fun to drive. Makes for a great family car, while keeping the fun to drive factor.Nov 10, 2008

Contrary to what most people think, the Maxima is a damn solid car. Coming from a racing background, it has a very good chassis for a 4 door sedan. My only two complaints, which could be solved by one request is if it was rear wheel drive and turbocharged. But we dont get that luxury that they do in Japan (Cefiero). If the maxima were even just rear wheel drive with the same VQ powerplant, it would be a classic. It was extremely convienient, had loads of room both in the cabin and the trunk, was pretty quick, almost as fast as my previous Mustang. Would've sounded good with some mods but as a daily commuter, i didn't feel the need to do anything to it. Overall, i would take this over the mustang any day. If you're looking at these cars, maintenece can be a bit bothersome and costly, so make sure the used one you buy has been properly cared for. As well as model year, the 2000-2002 i believe were the 222 hp and the car weighed 3100 lbs. (pretty light for how big it is, helped it handle really well). Then in 03- it's the same body style but they added the 3.5 instead of the 3.0 which also came with a 6 speed. The hp went up to 255, but i feel like the car's balance went sort of out the window just a touch with the extra nose weight. My model i feel was right on the verge of being too heavy in the front, but it was still a blast, you could get little rear end slides with agressive cornering. The extra power and weight of the 03 made it easier to overload the front tires.Aug 21, 2008

Handles great in all types of weather, threw rain threw snow it just goes! It has more then enough ponys to push u and the family around! pretty fast for a family sedan, it does 0-60 in 7.0 seconds!!! and runs 15.6 seconds in the quarter mile! Personaly i think its a sports car rapped in a family sedan. now lets talk about the interior. some of the fabrics could of bin made more stronger for a family sedan my car gets used alot. but ive had it for 7 years and no rips or tears in the seat.
