For me the styling of the 97-99 Eclipse works really well. With the turbo engine and manual transmission it goes well. It's not that expensive to run but does require regular attention, which is not a surprise after 15 years. Overall performance is amazing build quality- I rebuilt it by choice Appearance is amazing for 13 y/o, 1 small scratch, 1 door ding, and all new interior. Cost $4000 to buy, $2500 to rebuild, $40 a week in gas, Maintenance [none (After rebuild)] Fun factor...10 This car is one of the most hated on but best cars around even today, it is reliable and enjoyable.Oct 20, 2011

it is a good beginner car real good at hugging the road. now this car is not a racecar 140 hp lol but there is tons of aftermarket parts available that could give you the power it lacks. if you want something good on gas and looks nice i suggest this car. if you want something fast i would get the gsx or gst models. you get the same look with a raised hoop spoiler and a turbocharger, and with the eclipse gsx you get awd instead of front wheel drive.Jun 14, 2011

Awesome car, very fast and fun to drive. When you drive it economically it sips gas, but when you put the hammer down it really really goes. It handles well and even gets around good in the snow seeing how it has all wheel drive, which also helps with take offs. A real head turner.May 14, 2011

I like absolutely everything about this car. I feel really bad for it because the previous owners didn't take very good care of it. When my girlfriend and I bought it, I had to replace the engine and fix 3 oil leaks. The interior of the car is completely disgusting. The tan interior looks like it's black because of all the grease & grime. I'm working on trying to find an Eclipse at a junk yard with a black interior, so I can just replace the whole thing. So far, I have replaced the spark plugs with NGK Iridium IX plugs, changed the stock wires with NGK wires, put my full Sony Xplod system in, and put a set of Kyowa Trek-10 18" wheels on it. Lots more to come when I get the money.Nov 10, 2010

Best DD everrrr. 30-40 MPG and still beats every civic I pull up to. Ill never hate a 4G63t thats found in the GST GSXand Evos but...Even tho its a Chrysler engine... Real motors don't need forced induction. Anyone wana buy this car? I wana Evo XI now...Sep 23, 2010

the performance is ok, fun to drive anyway. I have had to replace suspension and some other pieces to my ecllipse, so for the build quality i'd give it a 6 out of 10. The appearance in my opinion is pure sex. I have the tan leather which is very comfy. I do not get good gas mileage, i'd guesstimate around 22 on the highway 19 in town. The fun factor is the sound of the intake and exhaust when you get at higher rpms, the gsx muffler screams beautifully around 5kMay 08, 2010

had a 2.SLOW for a motor. The engine code was 420a, which means it was primarily a dodge engine. This engine was shared by the Mits Eclipse GS/RS, Eagle Talon ESI, Dodge Intrepid, Dodge Neon. So, all very slow cars. Performance: very slow, handling sucked until i lowered it, braking sucks, acceleration...really sucks. This car is very fun to drive, also very reliable never had problems with it in a hard Midwest winter or hot summer...If you want a gas saver with a decent power/reliability/stability and everything else this car is a way to go. I drove it thru half the Country without a problem! I also had a 2003 Eclipse GT 5 spd and i kind of like this generation better when it comes to look and handling. Also if getting these cars make sure you get a manual trans, because automatic is not even close to being fun as 5 speed in these cars, transmission in automatic is not very reliable and also it leaks performance wise...so manual is the way to go in the Eclipses :-))Mar 31, 2010

Being my first manual transmission i am really happy about how easy it is to drive. it has a good acceleration rate and it only costs me fifty bucks every two weeks to drive. With cold air intake and an amped up exhaust it definiteley turns heads.Aug 01, 2009

I like the ability to easily add a lot of power to the car with simple bolt on parts. I still have a completely stock engine and just from upgrading parts I have over 300 AWHP and 320 lb-ft of torque.Jul 28, 2009

I am sort of salty about this because there was a GS-T right next to it, with more miles, and more money... at the time, I didn't know why. Oh well. I did a few things to it, for example, I fiberglassed the interior, put a JL Audio sounds system in it, a three gauge pod cluster on the A Piller (glassed of course), projector headlamps, intake, front strut bar, did a few other things to the outside... Pretty slow car, loud and obnoxious... but I liked it at the time!Jun 21, 2009

I really like my eclipse. The way that I have it set up it handles awesome and I can take pretty much any corner at any speed. Acceleration is decent for being N/A. IT looks perfect and everyone compliments me on it. Its always a blast to drive. As most people who know about DSM's know they arent perfect and require a little here and there but to me that adds to it cause its easy to wok on.Jun 12, 2009

I absolutely loved this car. When I owned this car I built it to have 400 hp! Acceleration was very quick! Breaking was on a dime with Brembo breaks, handling was awesome! This car was really fun to drive! The only rattles that I had was from my sound system that would rattle the hatch sometimes when the bass was too high. Appearance wise this car is beautiful in my opinion. The cost of ownership can be high with this model because of the AWD system and the turbochargerJan 15, 2009

great handling for a front wheel drive car, even though its low to the ground it handles really well in the snow and ice. performance is a great bang for your buck, the turbo modle is much more respectable. very low coslt of ownership, 60k miles and all i hace needed is new brakes. lound road noise.Jan 02, 2009

Bought a 1999 in 2007, with 86K miles on it, so the engine feels slightly old in terms of acceleration. Acceleration drop is clearly noticeable when I load the cargo bay and trunk with luggage. When light, it handles great, especially when taking turns at higher speeds. Interior styling looks great, in spite of being fabric. Mine has a black exterior with the design of the 2g eclipse and it looks absolutely gorgeous when it's out of a car wash. After a few snow storms, not so much. My 5-speed (manual) gives me about 22 mpg city and about 31 mpg highway - awesome! Beware of maintenance costs though. Body shops tell me these kind of cars get damaged from the front and parts are quite expensive. I guess you sign up for it when you get a sports coupe! I would definitely recommend this car to a driving enthusiast. For racers, the GS is the non-turbo trim with about 120hp, so I would suggest the GS-T or the AWD GSX. If not, there's also a lot of information on how to turbo-charge the GS, but it looks like your pockets have to run deep and you will have a lot of reading to do for a DIY.Jul 08, 2008

This car, has been my dream car for years. I, personally, love it. Very easy to learn all of it's little quirks, and easily to manuver through turns ( especially if you're a lil heavy footed like me and end up powersliding through the broader turns, lol). For only having 140 HP, it has a good bit of pep in it's step. If the base model performs this well, i can't wait to find out how magnificent the GSX AWD package handles.Dec 28, 2007
