I absolutely love this car! Easy to work on and has been very reliable. Easy to get HP gains and now that the car has been around a while there are some cool tricks to perfecting this car. It also gets about 30 mpg....when I keep my foot off the gas.
Stock motor mounts are terrible...buy inserts if you want the problem to go away don't continue to buy stock mounts. Also do not let the motor mounts go...the engine riding on the chassis damages so many things the motor mounts are there for a reason. If you car ever starts running bad or starts to want to die in the middle of the street. Took me a while but I found out the Coolant sensor on this car is very touchy. Change that out and if you still have problems check the wiring leading up to the sensor. The older cars get mine is a 98 the heat of the motor will eventually start effecting wiring, hoses etc.Jun 07, 2013

its a car that has a lot of hidden power that i am finding by doing a lil work here and

The first generation Neon is one of the sweetest and cheapest cars to own.
Now I dont mean cheap as in crappy quality but because its very reliable,
hardly ever breaks down and when it does is usually very easy to fix. Therefor
it doesnt cost much to own. I have one now with a 5 speed transmission and
I'm about to hot 200,000 miles and I'm still on the stock clutch. thats about
$500 dollars that I've never had to spend. This car is cool looking and its
extremely fun to drive. my first car was a neon and i've loved um ever since.
For such a small car it has decent acceleration. Top speed of only about
125mph but it gets up there fairly quickly. The interior is well designed,
everything is where you would expect it too be and its not too complicated.
There are quite a few aftermarket parts available for exterior mods as well as
interior so the customization possibilities are endless. I've owned a total of 7
neons (i currently still have 5 of them) and if i found another one tomorrow i
would buy it. Thats how much i love these cars.Sep 30, 2010

Performance - dohc motor is pretty good around 130hp
Build Quality - solid car , hard to cut up
Appearance - i love the smooth low body lines of first gens
maintenance - mine was high maintenance - a bunch of motor work
Fun Factor - this was my favorite to drive so far , it can handle weaving through traffic at racing speeds when you lower them(mine doesn't have the comp suspension) the dohc motor has decent red light take off & all i have in it is a performance intake,dual big can mufflers,gutted cat converter

Performance - Good when not broken
Build Quality - Horrible needs to be repaired often and
not just mine I know people who only complain about
owning a neon
Appearance- Horrid to look at outside inside is better
maybe because it takes away from the outside
Fun Factor - Could be if you use it as a entry level dirt
track racer replacement parts won't be hard to find if

I loved everything about this car. It wasn't the most powerful/fastest car on the road, but it was fuel efficient and it ran like a champ. The transmission could have used a rebuild, but after 200,000 miles how many cars wouldn't? The engine still ran like a champ when I sold her over a year ago, and from what I hear she's still running. I may be a bit bias seeing as this was my first car and will forever be my baby!Aug 09, 2009

this is a cheap car to purchase and is reliable and good on fuel. this car can be purchased for amounts much less then comparible import cars. and it has alot of technology in it. parts are easily accessable and inexpenciveJul 08, 2009

It's a fun overall car, has a 5 speed transmission which is really fun. It's a fun play car that's good on gas, it's easy to upgrade, and beats all the civics that think they're all that... It's easy and cheap to fix if it does break down. With a little money, time and good ideas, this can be quite a nice car.Dec 18, 2008

I like that I did all the work to modify the car to a vehicle that actually looks and drives great.
This car has never needed repairs other than the normal dodge problems. Head gasket, rad, exhaust, suspension, clutch.
Car gets great gas mileage and is quite fun to drive now.
The only rattle this car has is a mystery to me considering everything in it is less than a year old.

I owned this car for 22 hours and I traded it in after getting it from my brother in law. The cars interior falls apart, the exterior paint was chipping and fading. It had no power whatsoever and the power steering was out. The car did not have a CD player, no automatic doors or windows. It had no rims just hub caps. All in all this car was the pits. Moi je trouve que ma voiture va bien tant qu'on fait les revisions a toutes les années et qu'on la fait reparer au moindre bris, j'en sais qqchose je viens de faire remplacer ma transmission qui viens de me couter aussi cher que le prix de la voiture ............. mais j'aime bien l'espace qu'on y retrouve j'ai quand meme 2 jeunes enfants et on en traine du stock pour eux ....................Sep 01, 2008

Slowest four cylinder on the planet. Especially with the 3 speed automatic, ehhhhhh. Brakes are pretty good even though rears are drums and only fronts are disk. Handling is solid. Body is solid. Rear windows leak sometimes and moisture accumulates in the trunk. Gas mileage is good but would expect better for as low as the power output is. It's a car that you can make fun to drive but is slack when bone stock.Aug 03, 2008

Mine has never broken down in 10 years of it's life of which 6 have been mine.
Love the 2.0 DOHC engine, sounds good and packs quite a bit of torque for a ten year old $ cylinder. Killed a Miata like it was standing there! haha...
Installed a new front bumper with Fog Lamp holes, but I don't have any so it give the impression of air intakes, which makes it look much mopre aggressive. I love the way you feel the road in this car, feels like you're feeling the road yourself, which is great. Apr 08, 2008
