Absolutely love the Honda Del Sol. Its sporty, gas-efficient, and fun to drive. You can make it feel like a sports car if you add some after-market modifications. 4 stars and not 5, because its known to have water leaks from the removable hard top. Other than that, Id say I love the car!Nov 17, 2022

This car is cute as all get out--the style holds up nicely after all these years! Pair that with the legendary reliability of a mid-90s Honda, and its a serious win-win. Features are basic power windows, and will have to repair/replace a few minor things (e.g., trunk release lever, coolant reservoir ), but Im finding affordable parts on ebay and youtube videos abound. This car reminds me of the Mazda Miata, but again, Hondas rep inclines me to go with the Honda over the Miata--and the targa top is a better option, in my opinion, than a full-out convertible with a soft top. I owned a Honda Del Sol in 2000. It was a 1997 manual transmission. The one I just bought is a 1995 automatic. These little cars are so much fun to drive and last forever. I have always been a Honda person since 1987. This little c at r is fabulous. Aug 09, 2020

I love my Del Sol! Its reliable and easy to maintain. Parts and maintenance are affordable. For a small car its fun on long trips, seats are comfortable and having the removable targa top is a blast! I get a lot of people wanting to know about the car, most have never heard of one. Only thing I would change would be to make it RWD and have a 6 speed manual instead of a 5. Nov 01, 2012

You couldn't ask for a better car. The handling is out of this world. Smooth shifting transmission. The car gets 35 miles to the gallon or so and has rarely needed major repair. I love this car so much, I wish I could keep it forever!Feb 11, 2011

The Del Sol Si VTEC has attractive styling; it will make you either look twice or stare at first glance. For a small 2 seat roadster it provides a broad stance, yet comfortable inside for long trips. Honda provides a nice paint job that somehow resists fading, which is unusual in factory painted cars. Over the years being in the midwest weather, paint has flaked off but with a little treatment the flaking has come to a minimum now. As rust holes at the bottom of the car occur, I fill them in, paint over them & keep it moving!! From what I understand, thats a classic Honda. Granada Black custom paint so I can do everything myself. Not like Im entering Wolfy into any competition.
I have the 126hp VTEC (they came with the Si standard) 4 cylinder coupled with a seamless 4 speed automatic. Braking is superb. Controls-well placed & reachable. Layout is truly simplistic. The 2 extra storage areas are unique. Even with the top in the trunk, you still have a nice area of space for groceries, etc. We put 2 large suitcases and a duffle bag in there for our road trip & it did nicely. I like the window that rolls down in the back. Everything on Scooter is factory stock & perfectly happy with it. Stock helps keep insurance cost down too.
Expense to fix: BARELY NONE. Routine stuff like oil changes, brakes/tires is mostly going to be it. Timing belt/water pump at 90,000. Ive had my child 20+ years & believe it or not, mechanically, all Ive EVER done to it was routine wear/tear (brakes/tires), replaced SRS computer, new alternator, power steering unit/pump. Bigger items (as time goes on) will need replacing, like the timing belt/water pump at dealer at 180,000. Replaced the front axle at 120000, replaced the rack & pinion around 171200 or so. As any car gets older youll end up doing little things here and there. But with this car the costs are really minimal. Youll spend more time looking at it in your driveway than seeing it through the door at your local mechanic shop.
Petrol consumption: Be happy for the 12 gallon tank!! Its made for 87 Octane & does quite nicely actually & get about 20 something in the city, 34 on the highway. I think in 20+ years, Ive spent LESS than $6000 in repairs total. Honda body may fall apart but it will not die. The body will rot but the engine/transmission will be there forever.
Did a road trip in Wolfy in 2013. Only thing I had to do was an oil change, topped off fluids, bought some new tires & off we went. Drove 680 miles & got compliments all the way there & back!! Stopped at every 1/2 tank to fill up (on the road 2 times there 2 times back); just about $80 total!!
Honda has a great reputation for quality, reliability, & integrity. So far there is approx. 171,500 miles on Wolfy but with the way he moves youd never know it. He can outrun the wind. The Del Sol gives the ability to say yeah, I got it like that. Fun in the sun. Take the top off, put on your favorite tunes with the great sounding stereo & watch the stares as you cruise on by.
Cons:
This is NOT a winter weather car. Because its an Si, it didnt come with anti-lock brakes as an option. Even though traction is adequate, youd probably feel much better driving something bigger & not a car that would get lost in a snowdrift. Driving in the rain; with no anti-lock brakes you have to be a bit more careful.
Because of the low platform LB sits on, I feel like granny that has fallen in & cant get out. Honda couldve raised the height a few more inches. The cup holders are a joke. Unless you sit all the way back then you cant use them, & Im short. In winter Id only drive it when the streets are clear of snow or its just a cold day and there is no snow around. But if the streets have not been plowed, let it sit.
Otherwise I have no cons about the Del Sol; its ready for another road trip if need be. As old as he is, I still get people coming up to me asking about the car etc. At over 20 years old, hes still truckin along, surviving the mid west winter weather without a garage. There are dents & dings but still ya gotta be proud. Strange though, how people approach me & the first thing they wanna do is put very small tires on it then make it almost sit on the ground.
Overall Review:
The Del Sol Si VTEC is worth buying IF you can find one; they are scarce. It was a limited production which always mean it will become a collectors car someday. Its great on gas, its got the Honda badge that represents all we look for in a vehicle, its cute, daring, stylish, & its a car that will turn heads as you drive down the road. I highly recommend it for being a cheap, economical convertible that wont ever let you down for reliability, & a good time.

What's not to like? crazy DOHC VTEC engine that produces 180BHP @ 8300 RPM virtually no weight so power to weight ratio is fantastic, sleek timeless roadster body shape with an electronic convertible roof and GO KART sharp handling, this car is one of the most efficient fun cars i've ever driven, if it was rear wheel drive i would never get another car as long as i live !Jul 24, 2010

honda made the delsol with a cool targa top option for most hard top convertable lovers. easy to remove targa top fit easilly into your trunk with plenty of room left over for groceries. Another cool feature is the rear window goes down inside the interior like a limo window. Of course my delsol is unique in it's own way but they are very sporty and handle excellent. They remind me of a small toyota supra. Jul 12, 2010

I absolutely love my 1995 Honda Del Sol. It's a little 2 seater 1.6L 4cyl. V-tec that is a blast to drive. Mine is black on a black and red interior and looks good all the time. The 4cyl. engine packs a lot of power for its size, it has 160 horses but only 111 torque. If you ask me it would be nice to have a little more torque but none the less it's still pretty quick. The car handles beautifully and sticks to the road well with its low center of gravity. Being a Honda I'm glad to say that i haven't had to do a lot of repairs on it. As long as i keep everything up on it like oil changes and fluids it doesn't have any problems. The car gets great gas mileage, it has a 10.5 gallon tank that will last me 350 to 400 miles if i don't run the car hard. It's a fun and exciting car to drive and would be a blast for anyone.Apr 07, 2010

except for when you want to take 3 or 4 people places this car is amazing! It has incredible gas mileage and it has a removable targa top to for hot sunny days. The engine is pretty small though so don't expect to take it drag racing stock.Sep 24, 2009

I had the low model Del Sol so when it came to acceleration I was always left wanting more. With suspension upgrades it was pretty nimble in the corners. This car was a honda so it was super cheap and easy to maintain. The car was really fun especially on summer days when you could remove the roof and store it in the trunk. Another favorite of mine was the rear window that rolled down.Aug 25, 2009

New motor give it's a boost in acceleration and the handling it not too bad for a convertible. Build quality is mediocre, but the appearance is unique. Cost of ownership is next to nothing, and the it's an incredible to drive. Jun 22, 2009

I owned a new 1994 del Sol VTEC for 3 years. I loved it! When I wanted to get rid of my Explorer, I searched for the perfect "new" del Sol. I love it! The acceleration is excellent, it turns on a dime, looks great, fun, fun, fun! The trunk is huge - not something most people expect from a small car. Very low to the ground. Handles ike a charm. Great gas mileage. Easy to wash - the top of the car is easy to get to, even for me at 5'2".Oct 30, 2008

I have recently customized my Honda del Sol, I painted Black and green with marmolized interiors. It works great though I need to do some adjustments to the Engine. It has good gas mileage, and it is great to run especially when you take the top off it. Many people stare and it makes you feel like your rolling in an expensive convertible.Sep 15, 2008

It doesn't have the best acceleration, but it makes up for it with great gas milage (40+). Mine's only at 120,000 miles and I've only had it for about 5k miles, but I haven't had any mechanical problems. Another Honda I have had was at about 200k miles, with not much more than basic upkeep. The car is beautiful and so much fun to drive! Mine doesn't have a/c, but taking off the top and putting down the windows is so much better anyways!

VTEC performance in a shape well ahead of it's time. Lot's of wow-factor and fun with the hard top versatility making it one of the first coupe/cabrio sports cars. Very tunable but rear suspension needs lots of work and weight balance is too biased to the front making the rear too light when on the limit.Aug 13, 2008

I have the 1.6L SOHC VTEC (aka D-16 A3) It performs fine as a daily driver, and performs well enough to reach the "fun to drive" category. But it's not exactly race-ready out of the box. 125hp + 2300lb = Good times.May 30, 2008

A lot of people would scoff at the idea of a 2 door car, especially a small one with a 4-cyl engine, they'd probably go for a BMW Z4 or the like, but for the money, you can't beat a Honda Sol.Mar 29, 2008

Well if you are looking for a fun car for the summer, this is where it is at. Yeah I know it looks like a Chics car to some. But this little bad boy was one fun car when it came to pulling the top off and rolling to work. Killer gas milage and well it auto-x like a go-kart. Jan 06, 2008
