A few people love SAAB's, a lot of people don't. Performance and other figures don't tell the story. The car has character, and I love driving it. It feels, solid, willing and strong. It is extremely comfortable with a wonderful driving position and excellent all round visibility. For its age it is a very safe car and has wonderful handling on snow and ice.Oct 05, 2010

The performance isn't great but it's fun to drive. The turbo lag hurts performance but it's fun to experience a sudden surge once the turbo gets going. It's old enough to get enthusiasts to look at it but slips under the radar of most other attention (Just right for me). There's always something breaking on it but it's a small price to pay for a unique car that's kinda cool.Mar 18, 2008

I bought this car in 2004 as a replacement for an old 1991 Volvo 740 Wagon. Although it was (and still is) in less-than-stellar shape, the quirkiness of the car intrigued me, and Saab's reputation for building safe, reliable cars reassured me. The car is approaching 150,000 miles, and for the most part it has been reliable. It's a had a a few issues, and some mechanical repairs can be difficult and expensive because of the engine's odd reverse mounting (the belts reside between the engine and firewall) and the transmissions location directly underneath the engine. The 2.1L I4 engine provides decent power, although the ancient 3-speed automatic hinder performance a bit. This car would be a lot more entertaining with a 5-speed. The engine leaks every fluid imaginable, occasionally smokes and gives off unpleasant smells, but somehow keeps trucking right along. It really strikes me as one of those engines you simply can't kill as long as you are on top of keeping the fluids at their proper levels. The interior materials are not exactly the best, and the dashboards on these things are notorious for cracking. If you ever inadvertently lock yourself out of the security-coded radio, you might as well forget about it since the process to regain access is lengthy and absurd. Ergonomics are subpar and the seats offer littler lateral support. But the jet-inspired interior theme is overall quite cool. But the car really is fun to drive, and even in it's less-than-stellar shape, other Saab owners always want to chat about the car. I've met some cool people while owning it, and gotten more thumbs up than I expected for a car in its condition (a little rust, a small dent in the drivers front quarter panel, dropping headliner). The car is phenomenal in the snow and has basically become my around town car for when the weather is especially bad. But the enormous power sunroof and auto-down power windows make the car a tempting drive on a nice day when a little back road cruising is beckoning. It plays second fiddle to my 1989 Merkur Scorpio in this department, but is still entertaining in its own right.Jan 02, 2008
