What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 1989 Toyota Pickup express strong affection for their trucks, praising their dependability and fun driving experience. The powerful 22-R engine and torque are frequently highlighted, making it a favorite for off-roading. However, some owners note that the truck starts to show its age and can develop problems after many years. The interior is generally considered comfortable but may benefit from modernization."
Bought mine new for $10,000 in 1990. Now has about 245k miles on it and still runs great thanks to the wonderful mechanics I have had. Best trip in it was to tip of Baja California and back, before they built the airports down there. Those were the days... There is nothing on the market to replace it, so I will keep it as long as I can! Im a 63-year-old woman, retired salmon and wildlife biologist.
November 9, 2024The appearance of this truck is beautiful. I have been told on numerous occasions that people can't believe it is an 89. The motor is strong and has lots of torque, but when it comes to the freeway it's kinda a dog, very comfortable interior and everything from the factory still works great. Has needed a new stereo since I bought it but it works so I'm living with it. What else can I say it's a Toyota, basically bulletproof.
March 22, 2009Stock toyota suspension blows. the engine has plenty of pulling power and acceleration for what it is. It has great lines, easy mods, and effecient. They were right when it got truck of the year!! If you're looking for a great Toyota truck look no further.

June 13, 2009Well after it turned 18, it really started to develop some problems. Great truck for its time, just got really old. Was still mechanically sound. Some corrosion.
March 13, 2008This truck is amazing i have an 89 sr5 extended cab and it has to be my most favorite truck in the world. with 200k miles and still hauls its built like nothing else. its a 5 speed stick. and it gets crazy good mpg. the back seats fold up for more room in the back of the cab, and the drivers seats have great lumbar support controll. this is an amazing car to drive.
November 4, 2009Its a mudder truck that is very capable of much more! It is in very nice shape but there is still more to do to it. I can't wait to put a 1uzfe lexus 4.0 litre engine in to it.
September 6, 2009First Toyota owned, fun to drive , very dependable. Love this truck.

August 18, 2008The 22-R is a great little motor, tons of torque, just not to much top end in the thing. Perfect for four wheeling
