I have had this care since 1995 and 60k miles. I should have 200k+ now, but the speedometer stopped working correctly around 179k. Good to get around in Atlanta traffic. Just make sure you play defensive driving to avoid an accidentJul 24, 2013

Fun car to drive. Only paid $1000 for it so I got an amazing deal. I've repainted it
and gotten new wheels, then got more new wheels that are smaller with more
meat, lowered, racing seats, steering wheel, roll cage, AutoX coming soon.Sep 01, 2012

Underpowered in stock form, brakes well, handles great! I had a bit of problems
with the EFI/ECU. Car looks great and is very stylish even being 20+years of age.
Good mpg, 36 i believe, easy to work on for normal maintenance. Fun factor 9/10.
I love the AW11 chassis.Oct 31, 2010

Best two seater sports car I've ever
driven! Mine had the wheels off a 2001
Spyder, fantastic handling, great mileage
and responsive engine! With two "trunks"
and lots of cubbyholes if you are creative
could haul a lot! Better than Miata and del
Sol!Jul 12, 2010

This is a go kart with a license plate. Good acceleration for motor size. Only problem (as with other japanese cars of this era) is the rust. Extremely fun to drive. Only had to replace clutch at 188,581 miles, which is amazing for a factory clutch to last that long.Nov 19, 2009

Perfect balance of power, handling, braking, etc.
Typical Toyota reliability! Replacement parts are cheap!
Exterior could use some work, but when I have the ability to do the bodywork, it'll look awesome!
Cheap to own! (30-40MPG) $5k will get you a top quality MR2, $1k will get you a good DD.
Fun Factor is: Ultimate!!!Oct 19, 2009

Fun little car with great performance, plenty of poke. Handling reasonably good but twitchy on the road. T tops are a bugger for leaking, bodywork very tired now, spent a lot on welding for MOT last year. Fantastic retro blue velour interior. Comfortable seats. With sensible driving this car will return 36-38 mpg!Oct 18, 2009

I got this car and it was broken and after we fixed, it now runs like a champ. The worse part of this car is some of the stupid locations of the parts. It is cheap when it comes to the pump at 30mpg. And sometime a very fun 15mpgSep 23, 2009

The car was great in the curves provided the driver knew what he/she was doing. I actually outran a fourth generation Camaro Z28 and a 2004 Mustang with my MR2. Not many 4 cylinder cars can do that. It will do every bit of the 150 mph proclaimed on the spedometer and then some. To top of the exceptional performance, the car gets great fuel mileage.Apr 28, 2009

As far as I know this is the cheapest fun-est mid engine real wheel car you can buy!!

* Performance –
Acceleration - with a weight of less than 1000kg this car doesn't have to be that powerful to get it moving quickly!
Braking - When it doesn't weigh much it isn't that hard to stop it. Although when in the wet due to there being no weight in the front, the front wheels can easily lock.
Handling - Unbelievable!!!
* Build Quality – has it needed repairs? squeaks/rattles
* Appearance – both interior and exterior styling
* Cost of Ownership – gas mileage, maintenance
* Fun Factor – is this car fun to drive?

the amazing original toyota midship! the quality of this car is good, everything on it is really solid and nothing has broken yet. It's crazy fun to drive, the mid engine design makes it handle really well, and gives you a ton of grip. Launches hard, and goes around corners like their straightaways.Oct 13, 2008

The car is perfect the way it is, not too much power or too little. Not to big or too small. Since its a Toyota it will last very long and they don't build cars like they used to. Funnest car to drive. It is a real poor man Lotus and like Lotus I can't go shopping with it.Jul 19, 2008

Interior can feel a bit cramped but fit my 6' frame like a glove. I love the 'glove' feel and the cockpit layout. I also love the TTops and the fact the engine is behind my seat and putting out an amazing 115HP to move that < 2100lb car. Very fun! I'm so sad I sold it but it needed more work than it was worth and the body was very very bad.Jun 11, 2008

Ok, reliable (when I don't ring it's neck too much) and cheap.
MODS:
WMS 277mm 4 pot front brake kit, EBC Reds, WMS-spec Earls lines.
Mk3 16" (rear!) alloys all round.
Front strut brace.
Stainless exhaust with a jet-engine-sourced stainless flexi!
OMP wheel, turned ALU gearknob.
750W RMS ICE (removed at the moment).
In progress: big-valve (Formula Atlantic size) flowed head, plus maybe 1800cc sneaky block if I can be bothered.May 19, 2008

This is the most fun car I have ever driven. The sheer simplicity of everything, i.e. no extra,
weighty gadgets makes this sports car a dream to drive. It makes you feel one with the car.Apr 13, 2008

First car I ever truly owned. It has a jap import Supercharged engine and it is a little screamer. Very unassuming and will tear larger capacity cars to shreds. Just don't push it in the wet. With the extra power it can light up the rears without much effort. But it is also lightning fast off the line if you can get it right. Most fun in the twisties.Apr 08, 2008

Hands down, the best handling car I've ever driven. Throw on some Tokico High Performance struts up front, Racing struts in the back, and Cusco sway bars front and back, there's no understeer issues whatsoever, and it'll go around any turn at any speed you want it to. Only downside is that it's a bit underpowered, but the Mk.2 turbo engine is a direct swap, and damn near perfect for a car like this.Jan 19, 2008

The Mk. 1 Toyota MR2 is among Toyota's greatest successes from the 80's. Inspired by the Fiat X1-9, Toyota crafted what is nearly the perfect small sports car: and excellent mix of handling and comfort; of fuel efficiency and fun.
The first point about the MR2 is its weight. Being a two-seater, and also a very small car, it's very light. This is good, because the U.S. Spec 4AGE is not exactly a powerful engine. On a good day, it'll do 112HP. Again, though, because of the weight, the MR2 is still quick and zippy.
However, the 4AGE is quite possibly the best engine Toyota has made. It's virtually bullet-proof. These engines have been known to run for over 300,000 miles. Also, you can open the taps now and then, and still average around 30 MPG, and even higher with an automatic transmission. Response is great and you never get tired of the sound. Listening to this engine rev to the 7500RPM redline is simply fantastic.
The handling is one of the best points of the car. Its mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout keeps the center of gravity low and centered, and the power going to the right place. Push it too hard in a corner though, and you may get a little power-oversteer.
Also, between a good sized trunk in the back and a small amount of space by the spare tire up front, there's plenty of cargo space. The interior as well is much roomier than you would expect, with better legroom than many minivans.
To sum up, the 1984-1989 model MR2 is truly a triumph of Japanese innovations on European concepts. It is a poised, balanced, fast, and comfortable car that is great for a track car or a daily driver. And for those who feel the need for a bit more power, a supercharged version is also available. The Toyota MR2 is one of the greatest cars I've driven yet, and I think, will always be a favorite of mine.

The MR2 AW11 is a car that tests you with things you take for granted everyday. Stiff suspension and manual steering give it a much different yet better feel than a normal car. Plus it only seats 2 so its perfect for when you just want to take that person and everyone wants to bum a ride. This one was a modified one me and a friend bought and tried to tune it up. The person before us had put in a used JDM engine and put a turbo on it. I now own a '86 version of this car. The interior is pretty good and the seats are confy.Dec 07, 2007
