1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Reviews, Pricing & Specs

What owners say
"Overall, drivers seem to appreciate the 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon for its reliability and versatility, especially for camping and outdoor adventures. Many loved that it handles well in various conditions and has a solid reputation for never breaking down. However, some drivers found its power lacking, particularly when driving uphill, and noted the difficulty in finding parts for maintenance."
With the conversion to a Subaru engine the performance makes it drive like a new vehicle. Strong and quiet. All the camping gear is in good order including the fridge. It is great for camping and has a small carbon footprint for an RV.
March 10, 2011Bought to be used as an occasional vehicle and it is great when used for that. We did use it as a primary vehicle for a short time and it was not ideal. Modified it a bit over time to include head-rests in the back for the kiddo along with should strap seatbelts. The rest of the interior is great. Lots of mechanical work done and it is essentially a new vehicle under the hood! Exterior is next (painting and rust removal).
January 7, 2015Great RV as well as practical. Done 200,000 km on the clock with pride. Terribly slow as well

March 19, 20081986 AWD Sycro Versatile, 4wd great for touring, camping, hauling kayaks or lumbar. Weak brakes, takes inclines in 3rd gear no power on high end. Cost plenty to maintain due to age and lack of available parts. Repainted 95% full on restore
February 6, 2011It's been a real good van, just need something smaller. Kids have grown and going off to college. I just drive it back and forth to work. It's been real realiable, i know someone can have some real fun with this van..
