As can be seen from the comments above, I'm very high on this car. However, 1964 VW's lack airbages and harness restraints (I have recently added harness restraints in the front seats and added a roll bar 30 years ago to appease my family), and it may not be the best choice for a family car. On the other hand, my wife and I find it a truly wonderful car when the weather turns warm and the top comes down.May 01, 2012

Cheap and easy to fix up. A fun toy for what it cost me. Needs disc brakes in the front tho and performance would be a lot better. Lasted 40 years, hoping for 40 more. I love this little car! May 20, 2010

This is the best of the "original" Volkswagens before
requirements and regulations ruined the "Peoples' Car."
There is just no experience of "oneness" with your car in sound,
feel and emotion.
Obviously it is the car for the sixties generation to own and
drive .... simply for fun and the love of it!Feb 07, 2010

My first car, was pretty much a piece..but I loved it. The original motor was a 1200cc motor that I updated to a 1600cc but was still sluggish..probably my teenage tuneup abilities.Fun in the snow when doing donuts.Jan 02, 2010

Fun car to drive, great on gas, gets attention everywhere I go, kids instantly start playing "slug buggy" and at some point everyone has either owned one or knows someone who has owned one and has fond memories of it. Aug 25, 2009

The VW beetle is the quintessential economy car of the 60's and 70's. They didn't come with a lot of power but handled like a sports car and are easy to fix. With so many still being driven around, and so many aftermarket parts available today it is still an economical though classic car to own. I don't own one at the moment but I always have my eyes open for another.Aug 09, 2009

The '64 Volkswagen Beetle is not for the person who wants to scream down the hiway, darting through traffic, leaving weaker, less-expensive cars in the dust. The old VW bug is more for the Zen-Taoist driver who likes to feel at one with the car, peacefully enjoying the countryside, winding along a river road to the sound of the perfectly tuned sewing machine engine. If you appreciate old-world craftsmanship, and realize that the journey IS the destination, this wonderful car may be for you. Fun to drive? Oh, yeah.Jun 13, 2009

A true POS. Used to huff it's way up any grade over 5 degrees and more than a half mile long on the Interstate at about 12 MPH roaring like a castrated babboon. Grandmothers in Buicks passing you at speeds in excess of 50 MPH faster than it would go with the accelerator floored. Not a performance issue but it did manage to blow out the windshield wiper motor in the worst blizzard in PA history at 5:30 PM on a Friday night on the Schuykill Expressway leaving Philly on the way back to Scranton. Fortunately I located a mechanic who sold and installed the motor for $35 and had me on my way by 6:30. Then he gave me the best advice I ever received. He said you're from coal country right? Yep. Find a stippin' and push it over the edge.
Mercifully it blew a valve right through the block when a friend borrowed it. I traded the remains to get the inspection sticker on a rusting hulk of a 1967 Plymouth Fury with torn interior and no headliner that burned more oil than gas. A huge step up in automotive class that was only rivaled 25 years later when I went from driving a Ford Ranger pickup to a brand new Porsche 996.Mar 28, 2009

The old VW would go ANYWHERE I wanted it to including down creek beds when I wanted to get away from someone. It ran on the smell of an oily rag and was great fun to drive. It's performance was that of any 1200cc VW motor - poor, but hey - what the heck. Braking was okay but not outstanding and handling, well lets not go there :-)
It's build quality was pretty good overall and no rust whatsoever which is more than could be said for many other makes of that vintage.
As a first car for a guy who was an 3rd year apprentice motor mechanic at the time it was an okay car that kept running and was cheap to run - what more could you ask.
It was last of the 1200 motors as the 65 commenced the 1300cc motors which were a lovely motor. I would love to lay my hands on a nice 65 1300cc VW Deluxe beetle these days.
One VW Beetle to stay away from is the 1962 Beetle - it was a nightmare both for the Rust it was endowed with plus a shocking motor. It had different valve clearances to the rest and always ended up with burnt out valves - not a nice look!Jan 18, 2009

1200cc engine is great around town, but not so hot on the highway.
Fun to drive, handles well.
Doesn't handle collisions very well, need new hood, fenders, front axle beam, right control arms, bumper and frame head.
Didn't drive it long enough to break in the engine before the wreck. Factory spec. says up to 28 mpg hwy.Dec 30, 2008

This was the first car I purchased. The drum brakes were exciting at times. This car had lots of personality.Jul 03, 2008

Although this pic is not my car (mine was Indian Turquoise), my Bug (not Beetle folks!) was the best car I've ever owned.
They are good on gas, easy to maintain, and cheap to fix. May 12, 2008

This is a VW bug-powered sandrail. It is single port, air cooled VW engine. The VW frame is replaced with tube frame that includes a passenger roll cage, engine roll cage and side rails. This vehicle is in the process of being rebuilt. More information about the stage and process of restoration will be provided shortly.Jan 14, 2008
