Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner is a strong choice if you want a rugged SUV with lasting appeal and broad owner approval. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, off-road capability, comfort, and spacious interior. The 4Runner also stands out for its durable character and strong resale value, which are recurring themes across the model years.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs in recent expert-tested years centre on fuel economy, rear-seat space, and on-road refinement. For shoppers who want a tough, adventure-ready SUV, those compromises are often outweighed by the 4Runner’s capability and long-term appeal.
30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its reliability, ruggedness, and long-term durability. Expert commentary also reinforces its reputation for toughness, resale strength, and all-terrain ability.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is usually tied to age and wear rather than the model’s core reputation, so a careful inspection matters most on higher-mileage examples.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is estimated to return 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 9.6 on the highway, and 11.2 in combined driving, while the Hybrid is estimated at 10.3 L/100 km city, 9.5 on the highway, and 9.9 combined.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, while a large 14-inch touchscreen is available; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless.
- Safety package: All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features.
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner offers these trims:
- SR5: The base trim starts the lineup and gives you the standard 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, eight-speed automatic transmission, part-time 4WD, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. It is the best-value starting point if you want the new-generation 4Runner experience without moving up the price ladder.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds a sportier on-road focus within the lineup while keeping the 4Runner’s core rugged character.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the first clearly off-road-oriented step up, aimed at buyers who want more trail capability.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This trim adds more equipment to the off-road formula and is described as impressively capable on challenging terrain.
- Limited: This trim adds full-time 4WD and a more upscale feel for buyers who want extra comfort and convenience.
- Platinum: This trim builds on the Limited with additional premium equipment and also offers full-time 4WD.
- TRD Pro: This is one of the most capable adventure-focused trims, with the strongest off-road hardware in the lineup.
- Trailhunter: This is the most extreme off-road model in the range, adding 33-inch off-road tyres, ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks, extra ground clearance, a high-mounted air intake, high-strength steel skid plates, an integrated 20-inch LED light bar, and colour-selectable LED fog lights.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2022, 2021, and 2020.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 151 | 38.4% |
| 2021 | 138 | 42.8% |
| 2020 | 135 | 37.8% |
| 2018 | 124 | 26.6% |
| 2023 | 123 | 33.3% |
| 2024 | 121 | 20.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine strong availability with familiar equipment and pricing that still sits below the newest models. They also give you more choice across trims and condition levels, which can make it easier to find the right fit.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | $55,685 CAD | −12.91% |
| 2022 | $50,348 CAD | −11.55% |
| 2021 | $47,351 CAD | −10.58% |
| 2015 | $26,656 CAD | −9.45% |
| 2017 | $33,332 CAD | −8.56% |
| 2023 | $55,319 CAD | −8.53% |
| 2020 | $44,576 CAD | −8.46% |
| 2016 | $28,920 CAD | −8.25% |
| 2019 | $41,608 CAD | −7.1% |
| 2018 | $37,692 CAD | −7.03% |
| 2025 | $71,797 CAD | −1.92% |
| 2014 | $28,779 CAD | +5.92% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, and several recent ones show double-digit declines. That pattern is favourable for used buyers because it opens up more room to find value in newer examples. A few years are declining more slowly, and one older year is rising, which shows that demand remains strong for certain versions.
The 2014, 2025, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Toyota 4Runner safe?
- 2025: 7/10
- 2024: 4/10
- 2023: 3/10
- 2022: 7/10
- 2021: 3/10
- 2020: 7/10
All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features.
For the safest used buy, the 2020, 2022 and 2025 models all post the highest confirmed score of 7/10.
Should I buy a used Toyota 4Runner now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −1.92% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −12.91%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 20.7% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $50,348 CAD. The Toyota 4Runner offers a rugged, durable character that has long made it appealing to shoppers who want genuine all-terrain ability.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is available with the choice of two engines, including a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, plus a Hybrid i-Force Max powertrain with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, while a large 14-inch touchscreen is available, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless.
- Safety: All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams.
- Starting price: Canadian prices for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner start at $57,309 for the base SR5 trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!
