Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner is a strong choice if you want a rugged SUV with real capability and long-term appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, off-road capability, comfort, and spacious interior. Across the model years, the 4Runner also earns credit for its durable character and strong resale value, which helps explain its loyal following.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are a firm ride, poor second-row comfort, and hybrid efficiency that still trails expectations for a modern SUV.
31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its rugged durability, reliability, and long-term value. It also stands out for its off-road capability and comfortable, spacious cabin, which are recurring strengths across the model years.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.2 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, that combination points to a model with strong long-term ownership appeal and a reputation for holding up well over time.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, plus blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: 7-inch digital instrument cluster and 8-inch touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in all but the base model and a 14-inch touchscreen beginning at the TRD Off-Road Premium package.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid powertrain delivers a Natural Resources Canada-rated 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 9.6 on the highway, and 10.0 combined.
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2026 Toyota 4Runner offers these trims:
- Standard package: The entry point to the lineup, with the base i-Force turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder, 278 horsepower, and the standard 7-inch digital instrument cluster and 8-inch touchscreen.
- TRD Sport: A good fit if you want the 4Runner’s rugged character with a more road-focused setup than the off-road trims.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: The best-value trim for buyers who want serious trail hardware, including a locking rear differential, Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers, 23.1 cm of ground clearance, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, the Multi-Terrain System, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor.
- Limited: Adds a seven-passenger layout and a full-time 4WD system with a locking centre differential, making it a strong choice if you want easier everyday use.
- Platinum: Adds a more upscale equipment mix, with full-time 4WD and leather upholstery.
- TRD Pro: A more extreme off-road model with disconnecting sway bars, unique front bumpers, Fox adjustable remote-reservoir shocks, an aluminium front skid plate, and underbody protection for the transfer case and gas tank.
- Trailhunter: The most adventure-focused trim, with disconnecting sway bars, unique front bumpers, a snorkel, Old Man Emu shocks, rock rails, an on-board compressor, a roof rack, and steel skid plates for the front end, transfer case, and rear differential.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2022, 2024, and 2020.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 165 | 35.8% |
| 2024 | 145 | 33.8% |
| 2020 | 145 | 36.6% |
| 2021 | 136 | 36.8% |
| 2023 | 131 | 32.8% |
| 2018 | 125 | 32.8% |
These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a broad mix of availability, pricing, and familiar equipment. When more listings are on the market, it is usually easier to compare trims and find a version that fits your budget and needs.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

| 2017 | $33,499 CAD | −6.97% |

| 2025 | $70,004 CAD | −2.13% |
| 2014 | $26,576 CAD | −1.48% |
Most model years are down year over year, which creates better opportunities for used buyers across much of the lineup. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while the older and newest entries in the table show smaller changes. That pattern suggests there are still meaningful savings to be found, especially if you are open to shopping beyond the latest model years.
The 2014, 2025, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Outstanding car for adventuring and commuting in the city, easier to drive and park than a full sized truck.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

Toyota 4Runner test drive
overall

The old-school SUV connotes adventure, and the 2026 Toyota 4Runner is here to serve that purpose.
Shoppers looking for an old-school SUV should be careful what they wish for. The Toyota 4Runner compromises passenger comfort and interior space to make it one of the better off-roaders on the market. It’s offered as a hybrid, but fuel economy is never as good as in typical crossover SUVs, which will be more comfortable and more affordable. That makes mainstream crossovers better choices for most. But for those who want adventure while carrying passengers, the 4Runner makes sense.
Verdict: The 4Runner’s closest rivals are the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. Compared to them, the 4Runner can carry more passengers and offers better fuel economy thanks to an available hybrid powertrain. If adventure is a priority, the 4Runner is a great choice. But those who want a five- or seven-passenger SUV for daily family duty would be better off with a crossover.
