Picture of Toyota 4Runner

The new-for 2025 Toyota 4Runner proves that good things come to those who wait.

After a very long 15 years, we’ve finally got a new Toyota 4Runner with more capabilities, power, comfort, and technology. It's also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement, but it remains a solid all-terrain vehicle to extend your adventures further.

Verdict: Toyota doesn't throw out the formula with its newly redesigned 4Runner. Instead, the 2025 model keeps many of the features shoppers have loved for over a decade, while also adding a more contemporary selection of four-cylinder powertrains.

Customers say

Overall, owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its reliability, off-road capabilities, and comfort across all model years. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and robust performance, making it a popular choice for families and adventurous driving alike. However, poor fuel economy and the lack of modern features are common concerns among owners. Despite these drawbacks, the 4Runner's long-term durability and high resale value are often highlighted as key advantages.

Outstanding car for adventuring and commuting in the city, easier to drive and park than a full sized truck.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

This is one of the best cars on the market. The only thing i think its missing is a leveling kit. Having it sit a little higher i think makes it easier to see/ safer. The reliability and low car maintenance make this a great option for someone who doesnt want to spend money on repairs.

Mpg is too low for a commuter. Loud for daily drive.

Toyota 4Runner FAQs

What mileage is too high for a 4Runner?

A Toyota 4Runner can often reach up to 300,000 miles with meticulous maintenance, though a more typical expectation is around 200,000 miles. However, potential buyers should be cautious of rust and corrosion, which are common issues for the 4Runner and can become noticeable after just a few years on the road. Regular inspections and rust prevention measures can help extend the vehicle's lifespan.

How many miles do 4Runners usually last?

With proper care and maintenance, a Toyota 4Runner typically lasts at least 200,000 miles, and many owners report their vehicles reaching up to 300,000 miles. To achieve this longevity, it's essential to address issues promptly and perform regular maintenance. A well-maintained 4Runner can easily last a decade or more, providing reliable service for many years.

What is the most common problem with a Toyota 4Runner?

The Toyota 4Runner is known for its reliability, but it does have some common problems. These include issues with the brake system, automatic transmission, airbag failure, corroded solenoid contacts in the starter, and charcoal canister failure. Additionally, rust and corrosion, as well as cracked or melted dashboards and failed mass air flow sensors, are reported problems. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues.

What is the best year for a 4Runner?

Some of the best years for the Toyota 4Runner, known for their reliability and fewer reported issues, include the 1999-2000 models, the 2008-2009 models, and the 2017 models onwards from the current fifth generation. These years have consistently received high ratings from owners and automotive reviewers, making them excellent choices for prospective buyers.

Does the 4Runner hold value?

Yes, the Toyota 4Runner is known for holding its value exceptionally well. It ranks high in resale value alongside other Toyota models like the Tacoma and Highlander. Factors such as new and used vehicle prices, maintenance costs, and overall predictable expenses contribute to its strong resale value. Toyota's reputation for reliability further enhances the 4Runner's appeal as a long-term investment.

Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?

CarGurus experts gave the 2025 Toyota 4Runner an overall rating of 7.7/10 and Toyota 4Runner owners have rated the vehicle a 4.6/5 stars on average. If a vehicle has both strong expert and owner reviews, you can feel confident in its quality. If either expert reviews, owner reviews, or both are spotty, you might want to do some research to figure out where the car falls short.

Is the Toyota 4Runner safe?

CarGurus experts gave the 2025 Toyota 4Runner a safety rating of 7/10.
