Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner is a strong choice if you want a rugged SUV with lasting appeal and real capability. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, off-road ability, and comfort, and they also value its spacious interior and robust performance. Across the model years, the 4Runner’s durable character and strong resale value come through as recurring strengths.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are fuel economy, road manners, and, in some years, limited rear-seat space and a slower-feeling on-road experience. Even so, the 4Runner’s blend of toughness, utility, and long-term appeal makes it a compelling used buy for the right shopper.
28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its reliability, ruggedness, and long-lasting value. Expert reviews also reinforce its durable, purpose-built character and strong overall appeal for buyers who want a dependable SUV.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and how the vehicle was maintained than to the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is estimated to return 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 9.6 on the highway, and 11.2 in combined driving, while the Hybrid is estimated at 10.3 L/100 km city, 9.5 on the highway, and 9.9 combined.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, while a large 14-inch touchscreen is available; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless.
- Safety package: All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams.
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner offers these trims:
- SR5: The base trim starts the lineup and is the entry point for the 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, making it the best-value choice if you want the new-generation 4Runner at the lowest price.
- Limited: This trim adds full-time 4WD and suits buyers who want a more road-oriented setup with added convenience.
- Platinum: This trim adds full-time 4WD and sits near the top of the range for shoppers who want a more upscale feel.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This trim adds more off-road capability and is a strong fit if you want a capable adventure model without going all the way to the top of the range.
- TRD Pro: This trim is one of the most capable adventure models in the lineup, with the strongest off-road focus among the trims named in the expert review.
- Trailhunter: This trim is the most specialised adventure model, adding 33-inch off-road tyres, Old Man Emu shocks, extra ground clearance, a high-mounted air intake, skid plates, an integrated 20-inch LED light bar, and colour-selectable LED fog lights.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2022, 2020, and 2021.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 149 | 31.5% |
| 2020 | 146 | 34.2% |
| 2021 | 135 | 35.6% |
| 2024 | 129 | 22.5% |
| 2019 | 125 | 29.6% |
| 2018 | 125 | 25.6% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a wider selection of listings and a strong mix of pricing and deal availability. That usually makes it easier to compare condition, mileage, and equipment before you buy.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2015 | $27,547 CAD | −2.81% |

The 2025, 2015, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is available with the choice of two engines, including a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, plus a Hybrid i-Force Max powertrain with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, while a large 14-inch touchscreen is available; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless and a charging pad is also offered.
- Safety: All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams.
- Starting price: Canadian prices for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner start at $57,309 CAD for the base SR5 trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

After a very long 15 years, we’ve finally got a new Toyota 4Runner with more capabilities, power, comfort, and technology. It's also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement, but it remains a solid all-terrain vehicle to extend your adventures further.
Verdict: Toyota doesn't throw out the formula with its newly redesigned 4Runner. Instead, the 2025 model keeps many of the features shoppers have loved for over a decade, while also adding a more contemporary selection of four-cylinder powertrains.
