Is the Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used pick if you want a practical SUV with broad owner appeal and a long-running reputation for everyday usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

What should I look for when buying a used Subaru Forester?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The 2026 Forester Wilderness should get 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and we averaged 10.4 L/100 km during this evaluation.

Which Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2026 Subaru Forester offers these trims:

• Convenience: The entry trim starts the gas-only 2026 lineup and gives you the Forester’s core utility and safety-focused character at the lowest price point.
• Touring: This trim adds more comfort and convenience equipment, making it a strong choice if you want a better-equipped daily driver.
• Sport: The Sport trim adds a more distinctive appearance and a more expressive feel for buyers who want a little extra style.
• Limited: The Limited trim adds more premium features and is a good fit if you want a more upscale Forester experience.
• Premier: The Premier trim sits at the top of the gas-only lineup and brings the most comfort and convenience content.

What Subaru Forester do most buyers choose?

The Subaru Forester years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2026.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also tend to attract shoppers looking for newer features while still staying within a used-car budget.

What is the Subaru Forester's resale value?

Most Forester model years are showing price declines year over year, and several of those drops are double-digit moves. That pattern generally favours used buyers because it opens up more room to shop for value. A small number of older years are changing less dramatically, and one year is edging up slightly.

The 2014, 2021, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Subaru Forester now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.22% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −9.91%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 31.3%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $37,249 CAD. The Subaru Forester offers a practical cabin with strong everyday usability and the kind of all-weather confidence that has made it a long-running favourite.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The 2026 Forester Wilderness uses a normally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru’s estimates put it at 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.
• Tech: The infotainment system uses Subaru Multimedia Plus software, includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adds wireless smartphone charging.
• Safety: Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist, while most Forester trims also include active blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Automatic Emergency Steering.
• Starting price: In Canada, the gas-only 2026 Forester lineup includes Convenience, Touring, Sport, Limited, and Premier trim levels, with prices ranging from $36,884 to $48,384, including the $2,295 destination charge and other fees.

If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
