Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?
Yes — the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV with standout style, serious capability, and a strong sense of occasion. The all-generations owner rating is 4.71/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its rugged build quality, iconic design, and the way it blends luxury with real off-road ability. The G-Class also earns repeat praise for its powerful performance and the attention it gets on the road.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are its high running costs, limited practicality for cargo and rear-seat use, and pricing that sits well above many other luxury SUVs.
28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz G-Class models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the G-Class as well-built, distinctive, and impressive to drive, with strong appeal across the model range. Expert commentary also points to its durable character, serious capability, and luxury-focused execution.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz G-Class between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to high upkeep and repair costs than to the vehicle’s core appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe, plus forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition.
- Infotainment: Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus dual 12.3-inch displays.
Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers these trims:
- G 550: The G 550 brings a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, mild-hybrid assistance, permanent 4WD with locking differentials, and the core G-Class character in its most accessible form. It suits you if you want the classic G-Class experience with strong performance and the best-value positioning in the lineup.
- AMG G 63: The AMG G 63 adds a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, more power, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, and a more performance-focused setup. It suits you if you want the most powerful and most dynamic G-Class, with extra capability for faster rough-road driving and a more special feel overall.
What Mercedes-Benz G-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class years with the most listings are 2022, 2021, and 2020.
Those model years tend to draw the most shoppers because they offer a strong mix of availability, familiar modern G-Class design, and pricing that sits below the newest examples. Higher listing counts also give you more room to compare condition, equipment, and deal quality.
What is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $101,106 CAD | −11.81% |
| 2023 | $193,859 CAD | −9.61% |
| 2022 | $200,832 CAD | −4.57% |
| 2017 | $129,840 CAD | −4.48% |
| 2020 | $173,107 CAD | −3.59% |
| 2021 | $181,439 CAD | −2.92% |
| 2019 | $156,709 CAD | −0.16% |
| 2018 | $170,483 CAD | +7.61% |
| 2025 | $277,526 CAD | +10.21% |
Most model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which creates better opportunities for used buyers. A couple of years are still rising, and one is essentially flat, so the market is not moving in a single direction across the lineup. The biggest drops are concentrated in the older and recent-model years, while the newest model remains firmly at the top of the price range.
The 2019 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2025, 2018, and 2019 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?
- 2025: 7/10
- 2020: 7/10
The 2025 G-Class adds route-based speed adaptation for adaptive cruise control, automated lane centring, and an emergency-stop feature.
For the safest used buy, the 2020 and 2025 models both post the highest confirmed score of 7/10.
Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2023 model is at −9.61% versus a year ago, and the 2022 model is at −4.57%.
- Deal availability: The 2023 model has 34.2% good and great deals, and the 2022 model has 33.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $200,832 CAD. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a distinctive boxy design, strong presence, and a blend of luxury with genuine off-road capability.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest G-Class lineup includes a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, plus a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, and both pair with mild-hybrid assistance and nine-speed automatic transmissions.
- Tech: The latest model brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual 12.3-inch displays, augmented reality navigation, a Transparent Hood camera view, and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch touchscreens.
- Safety: The latest model adds route-based speed adaptation, automated lane centring, and an emergency-stop feature.
- Starting price: For reference, the 2024 G 550 and G 63 are priced in Canada at $183,500 CAD and $247,000 CAD respectively, before fees.
If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

top of the line suv with power, sophistication and smart features. the dynamic of creating a vehicle that is strong, sturdy and can be utilized for a casual drive as well as offroading is attractive to me. the vehicle is a higher level suv and the only downfall i see is the price but these vehicles will run many miles if properly serviced .

Mercedes-Benz G-Class test drive
overall

Mercedes-Benz’s inimitable G-Wagen brings luxury to the wilderness.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is unique in the automotive world. It combines the glitziness of the Cadillac Escalade, the off-road capability of the Range Rover, and the militaristic aesthetic of the Hummer with typical Mercedes luxury. For 2025, the G-Class gets a refresh highlighted by updated powertrains and tech.
Note that specifications cited in this review are for a first drive of models for the U.S. market. While elements such as powertrain specifications are unlikely to change, Canada-specific packaging details for the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class have not been finalized as of this writing.
Verdict: The new G-Wagen is rougher around the edges than other luxury SUVs, but it still delivers when it comes to off-road capability and creature comforts.
