Is the Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — the Hyundai Sonata is a strong used-car pick if you want a midsize sedan that blends comfort, value, and a well-equipped cabin. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk depends heavily on the specific year and powertrain, so careful shopping and inspection matter.

What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: NRCan says a Sonata N Line should burn 8.8 L/100 km in combined driving, but we observed a fuel efficiency of 12.6 L/100 km on our testing loop.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• Preferred-Trend: The value-focused choice, with the 191-horsepower 2.5-litre engine, AWD availability, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluelink connected services. This is the best-value trim if you want the Sonata’s core tech and comfort without moving up to the sportier version.
• N Line: The performance-oriented trim, with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, 290 hp, 311 pound-feet of torque, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a quad-outlet exhaust, navigation, wireless charging, digital key technology, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2024, 2022, and 2016.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, equipment, and pricing. They also sit in the part of the lineup where the Sonata’s value proposition is especially easy to see.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years are showing double-digit year-over-year price declines, which is good news if you’re shopping used. The steepest drops are concentrated in several newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older models are changing more slowly.

The 2015, 2017, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Sonata safe?

• 2025: 10/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10

Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).

For the safest used buy, the 2025 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Sonata now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.29% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −14.03%.
• Deal availability: The 2024 model has 33.8% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $28,476 CAD. The Hyundai Sonata offers a roomy cabin and a comfortable, well-equipped driving experience that makes it easy to live with every day.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer AWD as an option for Preferred-Trend models. The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.
• Tech: All models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the N Line also has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice recognition, and the ability to connect two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously.
• Safety: The Sonata earned a “Good” rating in the updated moderate overlap frontal-impact collision test, so the IIHS awarded the model a Top Safety Pick+ rating. Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $36,019 for the Preferred-Trend and $42,619 for the N Line trim seen on our tester, including the $1,975 destination charge.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
