What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, and Safe Exit Warning.
• Infotainment: 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy for the FWD 2.0-litre base engine stands at 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined. Opting for AWD sees that number rise by a litre, and the Natural Resources Canada estimate for the Kona’s turbo engine in N Line trim is 9.0 L/100 km combined with standard AWD.

Which Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Kona offers these trims:

• Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the core safety suite. It suits you if you want the Kona’s main strengths at the lowest price.
• Preferred: This adds more visual polish and extra convenience, making it the best-value trim for many shoppers. If you want a stronger mix of equipment and price, this is the one to focus on.
• Preferred with Trend package: This version adds a power sunroof, digital key, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, and a proximity-activated power liftgate. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without moving all the way to the top trim.
• N Line: This trim brings the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, standard AWD, sportier styling, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and available premium audio and navigation with the Ultimate package. It suits you if you want the most expressive Kona in the lineup.

What Hyundai Kona do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Kona years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular because they give you more choice, more pricing spread, and a better chance of finding the equipment level you want. They also tend to be the easiest years to compare side by side while shopping.

What is the Hyundai Kona's resale value?

Most Kona model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The declines are still meaningful across the board, with several years showing double-digit drops. The smallest changes are clustered among the newer model years, which suggests those versions have been holding closer to their recent pricing.

The 2021, 2024, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Kona safe?

• 2025: 9/10
• 2024: 9/10
• 2022: 8/10
• 2021: 8/10
• 2020: 8/10

Standard equipment across all trims includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, and Safe Exit Warning.

For the safest used buy, the 2024 and 2025 models both post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
