What should I look for when buying a used Honda Civic Hatchback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: A Honda Civic Hatchback with the manual transmission is expected to average 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, 6.3 on the highway, and 7.5 combined. Choose the CVT, and those figures drop to 7.7 L/100 km city, 6.3 highway, and 7.1 combined.
• Infotainment: With the Sport trim level, the Civic Hatchback has a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, when you get a Civic Sport Touring, you receive an exclusive 10.2-inch digital instrumentation display and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, a navigation system, and wireless smartphone charging.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing, a package of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and low-speed follow capability, automatic high-beam headlights, and traffic sign recognition system.

Which Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?

The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback offers these trims:

• Sport: The value-oriented trim brings a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, making it the entry point for shoppers who want the Civic Hatchback’s core character.
• Sport Touring: This trim adds an exclusive 10.2-inch digital instrumentation display, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system. It suits buyers who want the most technology and convenience, and it stands out as the best-value trim for shoppers prioritising equipment.

What Honda Civic Hatchback do most buyers choose?

The Honda Civic Hatchback years with the most listings are 2018, 2019, and 2017.

These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, colour, and price. They also often become the default search starting point for buyers who want a broad mix of value and availability.

What is the Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?

Most model years are showing negative year-over-year movement, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room to find value. The newer model years are posting the largest drops, while the older ones are changing more slowly. That pattern suggests the Civic Hatchback remains in demand, but pricing has softened enough to make several years more approachable for buyers.

The 2018, 2019, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Honda Civic Hatchback safe?

• 2024: 7/10
• 2022: 9/10

Honda equips every 2024 Civic with Honda Sensing, a package of advanced driving assistance systems.

For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used Honda Civic Hatchback now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −8.95% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −9.93%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2018 model has the most listings at a current average price of $18,506 CAD. The Honda Civic Hatchback offers a roomy interior and a practical hatchback layout that make it easy to live with every day.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: In Canada, the Civic hatch skips over the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque that acts as the base powerplant in other markets, and the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine provides 180 hp at 6,000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque between 1,700 rpm and 4,500 rpm.
• Tech: The Sport Touring trim brings a 10.2-inch digital instrumentation display, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.
• Safety: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and low-speed follow capability, automatic high-beam headlights, and traffic sign recognition system.

If you're buying used today, the 2018 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
