What should I look for when buying a used BMW X5?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Advanced Driver Assistance Package with Highway Assistant, plus Parking Assistant Professional with Active Park Distance Control, a 360-degree camera system, and Maneuver Assistant.
- Infotainment: Curved dashboard display with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen running BMW Operating System 8, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder X5 models are rated by Natural Resources Canada at 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres combined (10.1 city, 8.7 highway). Fuel consumption increases to 12.3 L/100 km combined (13.8 city, 10.5 highway) for the V8-engined M60i and 15.8 L/100 km combined (18.2 city, 12.9 highway) for the high-performance X5 M Competition.
Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW X5 offers these trims:
- X5 xDrive40i: The entry point, with standard all-wheel drive, a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, and the broadest value appeal for shoppers who want the core X5 experience.
- X5 xDrive50e: The plug-in hybrid choice, adding a larger electric motor, a 19.2-kWh battery pack, and standard air suspension for buyers who want electric range and extra refinement.
- X5 M60i xDrive: The V8 performance trim, adding 523 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque, and rear-wheel steering for stronger acceleration and sharper response.
- X5 M Competition: The top performance model, bringing a 617-hp twin-turbo V8 and the most extreme straight-line pace in the lineup.
What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 212 | 39.2% |
| 2022 | 177 | 42.4% |
| 2024 | 172 | 36% |
| 2019 | 166 | 31.9% |
| 2021 | 162 | 38.9% |
| 2018 | 160 | 33.8% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of newer features, broad trim availability, and enough supply to compare prices and condition across multiple listings. They also sit in the part of the lineup where the X5’s comfort, space, and driving character are well established.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?

| 2021 | $43,943 CAD | −14.97% |
| 2019 | $35,370 CAD | −14.33% |

| 2014 | $16,920 CAD | −10.01% |
| 2023 | $54,999 CAD | −9.76% |
The table shows broad year-over-year price declines across the lineup, which is good news if you are shopping used because it creates more room to find value. The steepest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle model years, while newer examples are also moving down meaningfully, giving you more negotiating leverage across the board.
The 2023, 2014, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

The SUV exceeds our expectations. From comfort to safety to style this BMW hit all points! My wife loves the sensors around the vehicle making her aware of any obstacles before incident. Overall this was our number one choice and happy with it. We also looked at the XC90, Grand Cherokee, GV80.

BMW X5 this is a very good premium crossover, I think this car loses a lot of value in the first year and then the price stays the same, it's a very decent car!

Great car with so many features. Some of the features I liked the most are Hands free driving ( Driver Assistant plus), record the parking route and replay it later for auto parking, using my phone and apple watch as a key so no need to carry physical key, live view of the car from your smartphone and so on. 46 miles of electric range and 3 different driving modes - sports, hybrid and electric makes this car one of the best cars I drove.

BMW X5 test drive
overall

BMW’s first SUV, the X5, remains an integral part of the luxury brand’s lineup.
The 2025 BMW X5 is the automaker’s midsize luxury SUV, positioned between the X3 and X7, and alongside the coupe-like X6. That puts it in a well-populated segment alongside SUVs like the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90. Following a substantial update for the 2024 model year, the X5 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a limited-edition model but receives no other changes.
Verdict: The latest version of the X5 isn’t the best value, but it explains this SUV’s longevity.
