What should I look for when buying a used BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Active Protection System, Active Guard, Driving Assistant, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Advanced Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: BMW Operating System 8.5 (iDrive 8.5) with a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, iDrive controls on the centre console, BMW Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The official Natural Resources Canada fuel economy rating for the 2025 BME 330i xDrive is 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2025 BMW 3 Series offers these trims:

• 330i xDrive: The entry point in Canada, with standard all-wheel drive, a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, and the updated iDrive 8.5 infotainment system. It suits you if you want the core 3 Series experience with strong everyday performance.
• M340i xDrive: This adds the inline-six engine and a clear step up in speed and performance, making it the best-value choice if you want a more serious driver’s car without going all the way to M3 territory.
• M3: The performance flagship, with the most focused chassis and the highest-output engine in the range for buyers who want the most capability and the most aggressive character.

What BMW 3 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 3 Series years with the most listings are 2017, 2014, and 2025.

These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a wider mix of prices, trims, and equipment. More listings also give you a better chance of finding the right colour, mileage, and condition for your budget.

What is the BMW 3 Series's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, and several recent ones show double-digit declines. That pattern can work in your favour if you are shopping used, because it opens up more value across a broad spread of model years. The smallest changes are still declines, which suggests prices have softened across the lineup rather than holding firm.

The 2020, 2015, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the BMW 3 Series safe?

• 2025: 9/10

• 2022: 9/10
• 2020: 9/10

The 2025 BMW 3 Series includes the Active Protection System, Active Guard, Driving Assistant, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Advanced Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control.

For the safest used buy, the 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2025 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used BMW 3 Series now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −20.99% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −15.72%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 38.2% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2017 model has the most listings at a current average price of $16,284 CAD. The BMW 3 Series offers sharp handling, a premium cabin, and the kind of balanced character that makes it easy to live with every day.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: Depending on the version of the BMW 3 Series you choose, you’ll get swift, speedy, or stunning performance. They’re all sporty, though. Our 330i was the swift version, accelerating to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.4 seconds with xDrive AWD.
• Tech: For the 2025 model year, the 3 Series receives an upgraded infotainment system running BMW Operating System 8.5 (iDrive 8.5). It features a new Home page with three primary information panels and QuickSelect access to the features and functions contained within the infotainment system.
• Safety: The 2025 BMW 3 Series earns the highest possible crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it gets a top five-star rating across the board.
• Starting price: In Canada, BMW offers the 3 Series as the 330i xDrive, M340i xDrive, and M3, with increasing levels of power and performance.

If you're buying used today, the 2017 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
