What should I look for when buying a used Kia Sportage?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada fuel economy ratings for the non-hybrid Sportage are 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres combined (9.3 city, 7.0 highway) with FWD and 8.9 L/100 km combined (9.9 city, 7.8 highway) with AWD. The other powertrain options are more efficient: the Sportage Hybrid is rated at 6.7 L/100 km combined, and the plug-in hybrid gets up to 53 kilometres of all-electric driving — but these numbers are comparable to the non-hybrid competition.

Which Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2026 Kia Sportage offers these trims:

• LX: The entry point with the 2.5-litre engine, six-speed automatic transmission, standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the core driver-assistance suite; a sensible choice if you want the lowest-priced way into the lineup.
• LX AWD: Adds all-wheel drive to the LX formula for buyers who want extra traction in changing weather.
• X-Line: Adds the rugged-looking exterior treatment, all-wheel drive, and the off-road appearance package with different front and rear bumpers plus all-season tyres on 19-inch wheels.
• EX: Adds more comfort and convenience equipment, and it sits in the middle of the range for shoppers who want a balanced mix of value and features.
• EX Premium: Adds 19-inch wheels, making it a strong value pick if you want a more upscale look without moving to the top trim.
• X-Line Limited: Adds the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Harman Kardon premium audio, head-up display, digital key functionality, and the most advanced tech presentation in the lineup.

What Kia Sportage do most buyers choose?

The Kia Sportage years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, colour, and price. They also often sit close to the current generation’s sweet spot for features and value.

What is the Kia Sportage's resale value?

Most Kia Sportage model years in the table are down year over year, which can create better opportunities for used buyers. The largest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle years, while the newest model years are declining by smaller amounts. That pattern suggests recent Sportage inventory is still adjusting, but values are generally moving lower across the board.

The 2026, 2016, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Kia Sportage safe?

• 2026: 10/10
• 2023: 7/10
• 2022: 8/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and lane following assist.

For the safest used buy, the 2026 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Kia Sportage now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2026 model is at −3.16% versus a year ago, and the 2025 model is at −7.59%.
• Deal availability: The 2026 model has 35.8% good and great deals, and the 2025 model has 35.4%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,091 CAD. The Kia Sportage offers a roomy cabin and a practical, family-friendly layout that make it easy to live with.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The 2026 Sportage is available with conventional gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and the non-hybrid versions use a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: A 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and wireless phone charging is standard on all but the base LX trim level.
• Safety: Higher trim levels also feature the Highway Driving Assist system, which adds automated lane centring.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $35,566 for a FWD Sportage LX.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
