Customers say

The Citroen AX is generally regarded as a decent small car that shines in urban environments and offers impressive fuel economy. Owners appreciate its lightweight design, which contributes to nimble handling and confident driving around town. However, many have noted reliability issues, particularly with build quality and braking performance. While some models, particularly the GTI variant, provide enjoyable performance, other versions may feel underpowered on highways. Overall, it's a fun and economical choice for city driving, but potential buyers should be aware of maintenance and reliability considerations.

Performance - Acceleration very poor, braking poor, handling feels heavy. Build quality - engine etc are excellent, accessories are terrible. Appearance - boxy and out dated, designed in the mid 80's. Cost of ownership - 60 mpg! very good, no maintenance required yet. Fun factor - definately not fun to drive, but times are hard!

The one I have is the basic 1 litre, 4 speed Elation Model.Whilst it isnt (surprise surprise) particularly quick with just 50 hp it only weighs 690 kgs-so its no snail either.Ofcourse having 4 speeds makes it more suitable to the city than the highway and above 100 kmh it starts to get the speed shakes due to it lightness etc. The handling is pretty good for such a small narrow vehicle -bearing in mind this version hasnt got powersteering (nor does it actually need it) Climbing small inclines is well dealt with due to its lightweight.Although the brakes are a known weak point, good driving means this shouldnt ever present itself as a problem as the car has good engine breaking characterisics. The build quality isnt fantastic-but its not a dissapointment either for what it is-it just deserves some gentle hands. It can be quite noisy due to minimal sound deadening but for short journeys this shouldnt be a major problem. For a car of its size the suspension gives quite a comfortable ride too. For me the minor niggles are- the seating position which cant be vertically adjusted and means driving like a monkey (arms stretched at times) which can be uncomfortable and the cramped rear seats althought the front seats and boot are pretty spacious for such a small car.The pedals are tiny and the gearbox needs some getting used to but it is easy once you get around it.Somethings are slightly hidden and require some french intuition to find ;) Its safety could be questionable in an accident due to the old design with minimal crumple zones and extensive plastic-but again no car is infallible in an accident. Looks are subjective to peoples individual taste-imo the AX definatley has an inteersting look which is typically citreon but is quite attractive. So far cost of ownership has been inexpensive with the insurance and tax bieng cheap and the petrol bills very small due to the cars great fuel economy 50-60 mpg with £30 or $50 filling a tank which will go on for 300-400 miles easily with calm driving. Overall, this car can be described as nippy if not fast and it is fun to drive at lower speeds due to its nimble handling and light weight. For what it is (city car/retro supermini) it is a very accomplished little car- if basic transport is all you need, this car does a lot more right then what it does wrong and is suitable for motorists who need an economical vehicle for in the city.

this is a great little car that has yet to let me down at all. the only time it has stopped was due to me not having any cash to fill up with petrol and turned out to be a test of how far i could go in the red before it finally stopped (answer = 55 miles in red - normally a gallon). despite its small tank (even with uk prices at 107.9 / litre) it will do 300 miles on a full tank guaranteed at the cost of 30 quid (ish). so the economy is superb for a petrol engine, insurance for me is almost pennies a month but would be very affordble to a first time driver due to being in insurance group 2. tax also is in the cheaper band being under 1400cc. this car actually cost me 100 quid with 5 months mot on it - you can still find good examples with same engine with full mot and 6 months tax for around 300 quid. to sum it up its a cheap runabout thats ideal for a first car and its also fun to drive too.

My Citroen Ax was certainly not my first choice for a car, but circumstances and vans got in the way of that and as such I am now the happy owner of a 1.1 Citreon AX Echo. Firstly I will say its not a car for people who aren't into cars, its build quality is awful and its noisey and very basic. But I like to view it as eccentricity. Its incredably comfortable negating the problem of modern motoring that is speed bumps and upto about 60mph it accelerates very quickly with a fantastic tone similar to that of a 90's touring car. Combine this with a 5 speed 'box and a kerb weight of just over 700kg and you have a nippy little hatch. Dont be fooled into thinking its sporty though, between 60 and 70mph it can have vibrations caused by what I believe is the shape of the body work, (though this could be poor wheel alignment it is 16 years old!!!) and the suspension being soft doesnt lend itself to cornering. The body work also lends itself to being pushed about by areodynamic forces you can feel it when you overtake a lorry for instance. Fuel econamy is good about 40mpg at the minute but you need to offset this extra money saved for any services/ MOT's. They are very flimsy. It cost me over £200 to get it through its MOT with no service! My passenger door doesnt shut properly, the knob has come off my fan controller and its got many squeeks and rattles. But dont be put off, Its a fantastic experiance theyre cheap so what are you waiting for?
