Why it stands out

The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta stands out as a practical compact sedan that leans into value, everyday usability, and a straightforward driving experience. It has a modern look and feel, clean-cut styling, and a solid, quality feel inside. It is slightly larger than its predecessor, and although its trunk is smaller, it remains a practical family car. For buyers who want a no-nonsense sedan with a sensible layout and a reputation for being easy to live with, that combination is a big part of its appeal.

This generation is also notable for its simple engine lineup and generous equipment. The standard engine is a 1.5-litre TSI unit with 158 horsepower, while the Jetta GLI uses a 228-horsepower 2.0-litre engine. Even the base model comes with automatic LED headlights, air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system, and a rear-view camera. Available features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control, and all models now feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The reliability record is described as nothing special, and early models can suffer from transmission problems. The core models use an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the Jetta GLI keeps a six-speed manual as standard, which also makes it the only vehicle left in Volkswagen’s Canadian line-up with a manual transmission. For shoppers who value a well-equipped sedan with a solid feel and a clear focus on practicality, the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta remains distinctive without trying to be flashy.
