Why it stands out

The 2026 Nissan Kicks stands out as a subcompact SUV that has built its reputation on value, reliability, and straightforward practicality. Nissan positions it as a small, affordable crossover for buyers who want dependable transportation without paying for more size or complexity than they need. That formula has helped the Kicks remain appealing in a crowded segment, especially for shoppers who prioritise low running costs and an easygoing ownership experience.

What makes the Kicks distinctive is how much it improved when Nissan redesigned it for the 2025 model year. The new version is more stylish, has more power, and feels more sophisticated to drive. It also adds all-wheel drive, which broadens its appeal for buyers who want extra traction in slippery conditions. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 141 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque, and while it is not a powerhouse, it no longer feels underpowered. The cabin is roomier too, with a larger second row, more comfortable seats, and improved cargo space. Nissan quotes 849 litres behind the second row and up to 1,699 litres with the rear seat folded flat, though all-wheel drive reduces the cargo figure to 676 litres.

The equipment list is another strength. Even the base model comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims add conveniences such as push-button ignition, wireless phone charging, a panoramic moonroof, a second 12.3-inch driver display, and a Bose audio system. Safety coverage is also strong, with standard brake assist, intelligent cruise control, and Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 package across the range. The main trade-off is that the transmission remains a CVT, so the engine can sometimes sound unrefined, and the Kicks still does not deliver sporty performance. Even so, its combination of space, features, efficiency, and available all-wheel drive makes it a compelling choice in the subcompact SUV class.
