Why it stands out

The 2026 BMW 3 Series stands out because it still captures the core appeal that made the nameplate famous: performance, handling, and a businesslike sense of luxury. BMW has long positioned the 3 Series as its most versatile and varied car, and even in its current form it remains one of the most accessible ways into the brand’s “ultimate driving machine” image. It also benefits from a strong mix of premium features and technology, which helps it feel modern without losing the straightforward, driver-focused character that has defined the model for decades.

For this generation, BMW offers only a four-door sedan body style in North America, and the lineup spans the 330i, 330e plug-in hybrid, M340i, and M3. The 330i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, while the 330e combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and electric motor for 288 horsepower, 310 pound-feet, and up to 35 kilometres of electric range. The M340i brings a 3.0-litre mild-hybrid inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet, and BMW says it reaches 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The current M3 uses a hotter version of that 3.0-litre engine with 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet, or 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet in Competition form, and it is the only version offered with a manual transmission. Across the range, Canadian models come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, except for the rear-wheel-drive M3 and M3 Competition.

The 3 Series also feels notably up to date inside. BMW updated it in 2023 with a new infotainment system and a redesigned dashboard, replacing the separate instrument cluster and centre screen with a curved panel display and adding new software with a digital assistant. Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air software updates, and available head-up display technology add to the appeal. The cabin remains sober and luxurious, but it is still a little tight in the back, and it is effectively a four-seater in most situations. Trunk space is ample in most versions, though the 330e gives up some cargo room to its battery pack. Reliability is generally good for this generation, but 2019 models have the most bugs, and these cars are not cheap to buy. Even so, the 2026 BMW 3 Series remains compelling for buyers who want a compact luxury sedan that blends speed, technology, and everyday usability.
