Is the 2025 BMW X5 a good car?

The 2025 BMW X5 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

Cons: Weak value compared to rivals; advanced safety features are not standard.

Is the 2025 BMW X5 reliable?

The 2025 BMW X5 is presented as a well-rounded luxury SUV that meets expectations for interior space, driving dynamics, and technology.

Its powertrains are described as smooth and capable, with the inline-six and electric assist delivering strong, refined performance. BMW’s four-year/80,000-kilometre new-vehicle warranty is comparable to most rivals, which helps support ownership confidence.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the X5’s premium positioning can make repairs and upkeep more expensive than you might expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base models come with 20-inch wheels and run-flat all-season tyres, while M Sport Package versions add sportier bumpers and a leather steering wheel. M Sport Pro adds an M Sport exhaust system, matte black grille surround, black chrome exhaust tips, illuminated grille, and Shadowline headlights.
• Powertrain: In Canada, the X5 xDrive40i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with standard AWD, while the M60i adds a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid combines the inline-six with a larger electric motor and a 19.2-kWh battery pack.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning, but not adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Driver Assistance Package adds Highway Assistant, a hands-free system that also handles steering at speeds up to 135 km/h.
• Infotainment: You get a curved display with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. BMW Operating System 8, voice recognition, steering wheel controls, and gesture control are also included.
• Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder models are rated at 9.4 L/100 km combined. The V8 M60i is rated at 12.3 L/100 km combined.

Which 2025 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2025 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i xDrive, and X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core X5 experience with the turbocharged inline-six, standard AWD, and the model’s strong balance of comfort and handling.
• xDrive50e: This is the smart pick if you want the plug-in hybrid setup, electric-only driving capability, and standard air suspension.
• M60i xDrive: Choose this if you want the V8’s extra power and quicker acceleration, along with the more performance-focused character.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top-performance choice, with the most extreme output and the quickest acceleration in the lineup.

Advanced safety features are not standard, so you should pay close attention to whether a used example has the driver-assistance package you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 BMW X5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 25.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 158 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.94% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $82,599 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $85,096 CAD sits slightly below last year's $97,741 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more price pressure than last year. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower average price point than the prior year, which can help cushion depreciation. For resale, the X5’s strong brand appeal and broad trim range should help, but value-sensitive shoppers will still compare it closely against rivals.

Is the 2025 BMW X5 safe?

The 2025 BMW X5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal and rollover crash tests, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver aids include lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. Adaptive cruise control is not standard, and you need the Advanced Driver Assistance Package to get Highway Assistant, the hands-free system that also handles steering at speeds up to 135 km/h.

Should I buy a 2025 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 25.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.94% compared with last year.
• It adds a limited-edition 25th-anniversary model while keeping the updated 2024-era tech and safety package.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $71,575 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $85,096 CAD average.
• It remains a delight to drive while offering about 63 kilometres of electric-only range.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with the current market pricing and the anniversary special, the 2025 makes sense. If your priority is lower purchase price and you are happy with the previous year’s core strengths, the 2024 is the better value play.
