Kia’s longest-running nameplate, the Sportage, gets a first-ever hybrid model for 2023.
The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in North America. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign. This segment slots in size-wise below mid-size SUVs such as the Kia Sorento (also offered as the Sorento Hybrid and PHEV) and Kia Telluride.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling.
The Sportage Hybrid is offered in Canada in EX and SX trim levels. We drove the U.S. equivalent of the SX trim for this review. Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which is offered in Canada in five different trims (LX, X-Line, EX, EX Premium, and X-Line Limited).

Kia’s longest-running nameplate, the Sportage, gets a first-ever hybrid model for 2023.
The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in North America. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign. This segment slots in size-wise below mid-size SUVs such as the Kia Sorento (also offered as the Sorento Hybrid and PHEV) and Kia Telluride.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid has all the features I was looking for in a mid sized SUV. The SX Prestige line I have and also bought for our daughter, comes standard with many safety and convenience features. The dashboard display is especially nice and doesnt have the squared off rectangular box in the center of the dash so many others in its class do either, but a panoramic look. I believe the exterior looks are very futuristic and not dated as the RAV 4 and the CRV. The seats are very comfortable and visibility is good too. It took some searching to get the exact ones I wanted, but not that difficult. using numerous car search sites and follow up phone calls. I was originally in search for a plug-in Sportage, but they are not sold in the southern states. The hybrid is the perfect substitute for that and less expensive. It also gets much better gas mileage than the non-hybrid version with more power and acceleration due to the electric engine component and the turbocharged gas engine. The only item missing for me would be power folding mirrors and a standard HomeLink rear view mirror which I will be adding.

More shoulder room than the larger Sorento. More rear legroom than the mid-size Hyundai Sonata. Perfect fit for 4 with lots of room for the people and plenty of room for cargo. And YES, I am getting 37.8 PPG after driving 80+ miles per day in mix of highway, 50 and under backroads and lots of up and down hills after the first week.

For me it is a contender. It seems large enough, smart enough and good looking enough. I like the hybrid gas efficiency but it doesn’t tow the 35-5000lbs of weight I need it to in the summer months. I will take it for a test drive and see how I like it. It is a beauty
